To explicate is “to unfold.” When we explicate poetry, we unfold its intricate layers of form as well as to content and theme; you must not simply indicate intellectual understanding by paraphrase, but account for the shape and sound (meter and rhyme) of a poem as well. We unfold a poem word by word or line by line, showing its construction, understanding its lay-out, and explaining as we go – giving reasons, meanings, and interpreting the interlocking relationships among words. It is your job to examine as many elements that applies within the poem: theme, tone, point of view, irony, word choice, imagery, symbolism, figures of speech (simile and metaphor), sound (alliteration, assonance, and rime), etc.
Poetry Analysis Prompt: Explicate any of the following poems by illustrating three many elements. You could, for example, illustrate the use of imagery, and figures of speech in Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est”, or theme, tone, point of view in Brooks’ “We Real Cool.” Choose three elements to explicate in any of the following poems.
