Assignment #20: Ancient Greek Ideals

This assignment examines the ideas of morality presented in excerpts from the Greek poems, The Odyssey and The llliad.

Part A of the assignment is structured like a matching game. Read excerpts from the Greek poem, The Odyssey attributed to the author Homer around the end of the 8th c. BCE. The poem mainly focuses on the Greek hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman myths), and his journey home to his kingdom of Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach Ithaca after the Trojan War, during which he has many adventures involving mythical beings. Among these, Odysseus and his men encounter a witch named Circe, Sirens who entrap sailors with their beautiful song, and a one-eyed cyclops named Polyphemus. In his absence, it is assumed Odysseus has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of suitors who compete for Penelope’s hand in marriage.

The Odyssey was a very popular subject for Greek painters who would illustrate scenes from the story on dishes, jugs, and cups (generally known as “vases”) used for holding food and drink. The translations were taken from a searchable database called Perseus

Step 3: Match the Passages 1-5 to the correct images, which are out of order. Your answers can be simple, writing the number of the passage to its corresponding image, i.e. “Passage 1 = Image B.”

Step 4: Provide a 2-3 sentence justification for each image choice. For example, what did you see represented in the image that matched the words of the text? (2 points per vase) ——————————————————————————————————————— ——-

Part B of the assignment requires you to analyze a short excerpt.

Step 1: Read the following lines of poetry from The Illiad, written by Homer in the 8th c. BCE, (Book 2, lines 246-56). Translated by Robert Fagles, 1990.

“But one man, Thersites, still railed on nonstop.

His head was full of obscenities, teeming with rant,

all for no good reason, insubordinate, baiting the king—

anything to provoke some laughter from the troops.

Here was the ugliest man who ever came to Troy.

Bandy-legged he was, with one foot clubbed,

both shoulders humped together, curving over

his caved-in chest, and bobbing above them

his skull warped to a point,

sprouting clumps of scraggly, woolly hair.

Achilles despised him most, Odysseus too—”

Step 2: Answer the following question (Answer should be 3 to 4 sentences)

1) What does this passage tell us about ancient Greek notions of the relationship between physical appearance and moral character? Use the description of Thersites’ appearance and moral character as evidence for your answer.
