You’ve just been awarded a $80,000 grant towards the start-up of your new childcare program. A
new Walmart Distribution Center just opened nearby, and you already have 15, infants 25 toddlers
(18-24months) 35 preschoolers, and 20 school-age children on the waiting list. Your new center is
licensed for a capacity of 100 children, as you prepare to enroll families you must consider that 10 of
the school-age children are siblings to 10 of the preschoolers, and 3 are siblings to 3 of the infants.
Using this scenario create a start-up budget; allocating funds based on the rough estimates given in
section 5-2d Analyzing Budget Categories (pg. 75) in the required text.
Address the following;
1. Equipment purchased for office, classrooms, and playground
What equipment were you able to purchase for your center? You must equip a total of at least two
classrooms, (choose from infant/toddler, preschool, and school-age)
2. What supplies did you purchase? Provide real dollar amounts and resources for purchases
3. How many staff will you be able to hire? Highlight starting wage, hours, and schedules, also
consider caregiver-child ratios. Research background check information and costs associated with
hiring staff in an early childhood setting.
4. How many children can you remove off the waiting list, which age-groups?
What is your potential revenue for the 1st month of operation, what is the tuition?


5. Create sample menu for 1 week of operation
How much does each meal cost?
What is the best way to provide healthy meals on a limited budget?
6. How will you cut costs and still provide a quality program?
Income Statement
Create an income statement that illustrates your potential revenue (tuition, registration fees etc.),
expenses. Provide a detailed description using this information to explain your plan for removing
more children from the waiting list, hiring more teachers, and equipping the center. (Refer to the
sample given on page 88 in the text.)
