The engineering design process is a methodical series of steps that engineers use in creating functional products and processes. You are recently recruited in a leading company as a junior engineer to design products on demand according to their customers’ requirements. Your manager has asked you to design a product to meet requirement of the client and produce a design report (You must set the client brief and your own design specification for the product). The report can be used by company’s sales and marketing department as well as assessing health and safety issues relating to insurance cover.

Based on the selected client brief, you are required to carry out the following tasks:

LO1 Plan a design solution and prepare an engineering design specification in response to a stakeholder’s design brief and requirements.

Task 1

a.     Produce a design specification from a given design brief.

b.     Explain the influence of the stakeholder’s design brief and requirements in the preparation of the design specification.

c.     Produce a design project schedule with a graphical illustration of the planned activities.

d.    Evaluate potential planning techniques, presenting a case for the method chosen.

e.     Demonstrate critical path analysis techniques in design project scheduling/planning and explain its use.

f.     Compare and contrast the completed design specification against the relevant industry standard specification.

LO2 Formulate possible technical solutions to address the student-prepared design specification.

Task 2

a.     Explore industry’s standard evaluation and analytical tools in formulating possible technical solutions.

b.    Use appropriate design techniques to produce possible design solution.

c.     Apply the principles of modelling/ simulation/prototyping, using appropriate software, to develop appropriate design solutions.

d.    Evaluate potential technical solutions, presenting a case for the final choice of solution.

LO3 Prepare an industry-standard engineering technical design report.

Task 3

a.     Prepare an industry-standard engineering technical design.

b.    Assess the presented technical design and identify any potential limitation it may have.

c.    Explain the role of design specifications and standards in producing a finished product.

d.    Identify and assess any compliance, safety and risk management issues present in the chosen solution.

e.    Evaluate the effectiveness of the presented industry standard engineering technical design report for producing a fully compliant finished product.

LO4 Present to an audience a design solution based on the design report and evaluate the solution/presentation

Task 4

a.     Present the recommended design solution to the identified audience.

b.    Explain possible communication strategies and presentation methods that could be used to inform the stakeholders of the recommended solution.

c.     Reflect on effectiveness of communication strategy in presenting the solution.

d.    Justify potential improvements to the presented design solution and /or presentation based on reflection and/or feedback.

a.    Please submit your all tasks in one report ON TIME.

b.    All tasks MUST be submitted on time to be considered for a DISTINCTION grade.

c.     All assignments will be subject to PLAGIARISM checks.  PLAGIARISM is a serious academic offence and will automatically lead to ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT PROCEDURES. In the event of COLLUSION (similar/identical submissions) please note that both students will automatically be subject to ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT PROCEDURES.

When IPADS/TABLETS/MACS are used please make sure documents are saved as .doc. Otherwise the submission will not be valid and may not be marked.

What to Submit

·       The report should include all the above tasks and should not exceed 20 pages.

·       The final design should be modelled using ‘Specified CAD software’ and the design report should include a CAD generated 3D model of the final design assembly, relevant 3D parts and drawings. This should be included in the appendix section.

·       Your design will have more than one 3D part/component that makes up the whole assembly and detailed drawings for each part, in addition to the overall assembly drawing.
