The Janus and Harris cases

Recently in June 2018, the US Supreme Court ruled in the case Janus v AFSCME that public employees are not required to pay union fees to cover the cost of collective bargaining as paying such fees violates their First Amendment rights. This overturns over 40 years of precedent.

.The U. S. Supreme Court case Harris ET AL. v. Quinn, Governor of Illinois ET AL., decided 6/30/2014, held a home care aid worker who typically works for an ill or disabled person, with Medicaid paying their wages, should be classified as partial public employee and therefore not required to pay public sector union fees/dues.

On the Illinois voting ballot in November, 2022 is the question for voters to vote yes or no to amend the state constitution to include public unions right to collective bargaining. this endeavor is know as the “Workers Right s Amendment”
