Paper Prompt:

Choose one of the following and write a 3-5 page essay:

A.    Exemplification

1. Write an essay in which you establish you are an optimistic or pessimistic person. Use at least two or three examples to support your case.
2. Using your family and friends as examples, write an essay in which you suggest some of the positive or negative characteristics of Americans.
3. Write an essay in which you identify and discuss what you believe is the most pressing problem you have faced and overcome.

B.     Process

1. Write a process explanation of an unpleasant experience you or someone you know has often gone through in order to conform to others’ standards of physical beauty. Include a thesis statement that conveys your disapproval of the process.

C.    Cause & Effect

1. An author’s note that originally introduced Mirikitani’s poem “Suicide Note” explained the main cause of the student’s death:

An Asian-American college student was reported to have jumped to

her death from her dormitory window.  Her body was found two days

later under a deep cover of snow. Her suicide note contained an

apology to her parents for having received less than a perfect four-

point grade average…

What other causes might have contributed to her suicide?

1. What do you see as the major cause of any one of these problems: acquaintance rape, binge drinking among college students, voter apathy, school shootings, academic cheating?  Based on your identification of its causes, formulate some specific solutions for the problem you select.

D.    Comparison & Contrast

1. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the expectations that college professors and high school teachers have for their students, citing your own experiences as examples.
2. How are the attitudes toward education different among students who work to finance their own education and students who do not? Your thesis statement should explain what differences exist and why.
3. Write an essay in which you compare any two groups that have divergent values – vegetarians and meat eaters or smokers and nonsmokers, for example.
