Why does Pascal think that, if one seeks reason, he cannot avoid one of these three sects: the skeptics, the Platonists, and the dogmatists (VII, paragraph 131)? What characterizes each of these sects?
The social theorist Allan Bloom (1930-1992), late of the University of Chicago, has written that “[e]very Frenchman is born, or at least early on becomes. Cartesian or Pascalian” (The Closing of the American Mind, 1987: 52). How does Pascal’s view of human reason and its limitations differ from that of Descartes? Which view do you think is more correct? Defend your answer.
