Hume divides the perceptions of the mind into two classes he takes to be mutually exclusive

Please choose at least one of the following discussion questions and respond with an initial post as a thread in this discussion board forum. The post must be a minimum of 250 words in length and demonstrate course-related knowledge. You may also use outside resources in the post, properly cited in APA.
  1. Hume divides the perceptions of the mind into two classes he takes to be mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive. What are these two classes? What examples does he give of each? Are these two classes exclusive and exhaustive, as he claims? (Section 2)
  2. Hume argues that every simple idea is a copy of an impression of inner or outer sense and that every complex idea is a bundle or assemblage of simple ideas, that is, complex ideas are structured ensembles of simple ideas. What two arguments does he offer for these theses? How compelling are these arguments? Does Hume think both arguments are equally good? Explain. (Section 2)
  3. What three principles does Hume maintain to associate or connect ideas with each other? Do you think he intends these three principles to be laws of the mind analogous to Newton’s three laws of motion? (Section 3)
  4. Hume raises skeptical doubts about the operation of the human understanding. Give a general account of these doubts and then explain his skeptical “resolution” of them. (Sections 4 and 5)
  5. How does Hume characterize the relationship between cause and effect? How then does he analyze the idea of a necessary connection? (Hint: given his view that causation is no more than constant conjunction and “all events seem loose and separate,” from whence arises the idea of necessity?) Does Hume provide sufficient philosophical ground for the idea of necessary connection or has he undermined it entirely? How would you seek to ground the idea of physical causation? Do you see physical causation as something necessary? If not, what explains the order in nature? (Section 4, Part 2; Section 5)
  6. How does Hume define a “miracle”? What arguments does he offer against the occurrence of miracles and against believing any account ever given of a miracle? How would you critique his argument against miracles? Are his arguments consistent with his views about causation? (Section 10)
In addition to the initial post, reply to 2 other classmates’ posts. Each reply must be a minimum of 150 words in length and be substantive in content, adding to the discussion the classmate began in his/her original post.
