Musical Response Format

Introductory Paragraph:
Introduce your Response with an engaging, inviting statement that could be used as a title for your
paper. It should capture the mood of the production, tell us something about the setting, and give
you a chance to provide a hint at how impressed you were – or were not – with the play.
Required in the first paragraph: (1) Title of the play, (2) when and where you viewed the play, (3) the
name of the lyricist, composer and book writer, (4) the producing entity.
Writing Skill suggestions:
• Do not just list this information. Work it into the “story” of your opening paragraph so it is
visible but does not detract from your “inviting statement.”
• Always italicize or underline play titles, wherever they occur. No quotation marks.
Body of the Paper:
(Writing Skill suggestion: Structure this portion of the essay with coherent, unified, expressive
paragraphs, knowledgeable vocabulary, and meaningful transition sentences. Do not use bullet
points even though the instructions are written that way.)
Paragraph 2: Plot.
• Briefly summarize the plot of the play. Do not include every event or “tell the story”.
• Organize your remarks to describe the:
• Setting
• Main characters
• Main conflict
• Climax
• Resolution
Paragraph 3: Music in Performance.
• Describe specific moments when the music touched you and helped you
understand the main characters’ conflicts.
• Describe specific moments when the music helped you understand the
prevailing attitudes, desires and fears of the time and place.
• Note: Always name the actor when you discuss his or her work, including
musical performance. Use both names in the first mention, last name only
with subsequent mentions. “Actor” applies to all genders equally. All actors
and their characters will be listed in your Playbill.
• Know the difference between “actor” and “character”. The actor is working
and knows you are there; the character is living and sees no audience.
Paragraph 4: Design elements (lighting, sound, costumes, make up, set design and props).
• Choose ONE element that succeeded and ONE element that was less successful.
• Describe specific design choices to validate your conclusions of success or failure.
• Always provide the name of the artist who designed these elements. They will be listed
in your playbill.

Concluding Paragraph:
React to the play as a whole. Identify the theatre makers’ desired audience response, in your opinion.
Did they get it?
Writing Skill Suggestions:
You are expected to write at the college level and that is how you will be graded. There should be no
spelling, syntax, grammar, or punctuation errors. Your writing should be marked by fluency and
imaginative self -expression.
