Objective: To inform or share new knowledge with your audience about a current
social issue or topic.
Rationale: Being aware of what is happening in the world is an important part of
being an engaged citizen. One purpose of this speech is to become an informed citizen
about social issues relevant to us all. It is up to you, the speaker, to make sure your
audience understands the significance of your topic and how it relates to them.
Description: For this speech, you will inform the audience about a topic of
choice. Your issue or topic needs to be a current event, topic, or person that is still
relevant. Your topic can also be one that is novel or obscure. Just make sure your topic
is appropriate for the academic setting.
Grading Criteria: You should have the following things for your speech:
1. An appropriate introduction–meeting the five criteria (attention-getter, thesis/state
topic, establish credibility, relate to audience/motivate audience, preview of main
points).
2. Evidence of audience analysis throughout the speech. A primary goal of this
speech is to help your audience understand how your social issue or topic affects them.
3. At least two main ideas/points (preferably three).
4. Use at least three different types of supporting material (i.e. facts, testimony,
examples) and a visual aid
5. Use at least three sources, the three must be from published material, all must be
from the last 10 years. Wikipedia should not be used as a source for this assignment.
Blogsites are not allowed either unless the person is well known or a household name
and expert in the field. If you are not published do not consider yourself a source. Oral
footnotes should be used to cite your sources within your speech.
6. Proper use of an informative organizational design.
7. In order for it to be considered an informative speech, you must share “new”
knowledge or insight, beyond what your audience is likely to know.
8. An appropriate conclusion (restating main points of speech and ending with
some emphasis).
9. A typed formal outline with bibliography is due by Apr. 17 in Canvas.
10. An extemporaneous delivery. You may speak from a key word outline or use one
note card.
11. An attempt to enhance Ethos through your appearance (no jeans, tennis shoes,
caps etc.).
