Select a peer-reviewed, scholarly rhetorical text from your discipline, from your future profession, or from a concurrent class.

Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing exercise and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

This assignment will work both as instruction in writing a proposal and as the base for your rhetorical analysis paper. You will be proposing the text that you will be using for your Paper 3, aka the rhetorical analysis.

Purpose: The rationale for the three categories of texts you can choose from (discipline, future profession, concurrent course) is directly informed by the ePortfolio project. In the ePortfolio project, you will be creating your ePortfolio and including two papers from this course. A rhetorical analysis of a text that intersects with your professional or academic goals accomplishes many things at once and will provide additional appeal for future employers/stakeholders who are looking at your ePortfolio. I recommend that when selecting your text you make a decision that speaks to some of your goals and, as a result, offers a heightened alignment between self, skills, and accomplishments.

Genre: You are writing in the genre of proposal.

Audience: Your intended audience is your instructor. For this assignment, I am your instructor, but for other courses, it’ll be whatever instructor you are writing the paper for.

Requirements

Directions:

  1. Select a peer-reviewed, scholarly rhetorical text from your discipline, from your future profession, or from a concurrent class.
    1. Discipline: In my discipline (English), we often conduct literary analysis where authors persuade audiences to agree with their analysis or reading of a particular piece of literature. If I were writing Paper 3, I might choose to rhetorically analyze a literary analysis.
    2. Future Profession: I am actively pursuing publication for one of my novels, so you could call becoming a published author my future profession. If I were writing Paper 3, I might choose to rhetorically analyze a text trying to persuade readers to use a particular craft technique.
    3. Concurrent Class: For once in my life, I am not currently taking any classes, but I will use one of my previous courses as an example. I took a course focusing on constructing college composition courses during my graduate program. If I were writing paper 3, I might choose to rhetorically analyze one of the texts about the various theories behind the teaching of college composition.
  2. In a minimum of 300 words, explain the text’s rhetorical situation: its context, purpose, and audience. The rhetorical situation is discussed further in the lecture and reading above. Submit this portion as an attached .doc or .docx document.
  3. In a minimum of 100 words, explain why you chose the text.
  4. Clearly label all sections of the proposal for ease of reading.
  5. Include the text you selected as a separate attachment. Make sure the text is accessible (i.e. if it’s a document, the document is not restricted. If it’s a link, the link is operable. Etc.)

Note: Each section should have a heading. Use the bolded text from each of the above for your section titles. Also, this needs to be in Times New Roman, double spaced, 12 pt. Font with an MLA title.

Length Minimum of 400 words.
