Learning Goal: I’m working on a english writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
In unit 2, we continue working with CARS moves in your discipline, but with the shift of actually using them to propose your own research agenda. The paper prompt will be available at the beginning of the unit, and your goal will be to aggressively conduct independent research to write a short proposal for a study in your discipline that contributes to knowledge in your field. Your job is not to actually perform the study, however. You will practice the research and rhetorical skills of narrowing down the terrain (move 1), establishing a gap (move 2), and proposing a study to fill it (deliver your research questions/agenda, benefits of the study and projected possible findings, move 3). You stop there. In other words, you write the introduction, not the whole article.Note: Students in the past have found ways to coordinate this project with writing and research projects for other classes, a senior thesis or capstone project, or a lab report, for instance. This is fine with me as long as you do the work required in the prompt. If you’d like to go this route, come talk with me about it.In the course of this project, you will learn how to narrow down a research topic enough to make legitimate knowledge claims in your discipline, and how to USE research strategically to make your project authoritative. You will be encouraged to pick a scholarly example to emulate.
In a minimum 1000 word essay (not including references, footnotes, or works cited page, as the case my be with your discipline), propose an academic research project in your field of study, in an area that interests you.
Importantly, you are not actually conducting this study. You will not be collecting data and reporting on findings, or delving deeply into your articles. Instead, in this project, you are writing the “introduction” to a possible article that does report on your findings, using CARS moves 1, 2, and 3.
Requirements:
Seven sources minimum. Two can be from Unit 1. One can be “popular” (but none need be). All references to follow the style guide appropriate for your discipline.
Writing rubric in a separate document.
Your Move 3 MUST be modeled off a scholarly example you are emulating. The example must be listed and identified in your works cited.
