Significance of Client Teaching

Client teaching is directed toward promoting, maintaining, and restoring health and assisting clients in dealing with the residual effects of illness.

 

Components of a Teaching Plan

1. Identify client’s lack of knowledge (assessment of learner).
2. Develop appropriate nursing diagnoses (4).
3. Identify short-term and long-term goals. (4 each)
4. List and identify learning outcomes (cognitive, psychomotor, affective).

Write behavioral objectives.

5. Create a content outline.
6. Identify effective teaching methods.
7. Present teaching plan to client.
8. Describe evaluation methods.

 

Examples of Teaching Plan

1. Your client is newly-diagnosed with Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) What is the vitals for your client to know prior to discharge? BP, HR, RR, SPOx, Temp

 

2. You are assigned to teach an elderly client about the medications that he or she will be taking at home. How would you assess this client’s condition and psychosocial situation to determine how best to instruct the client about medications?

 

Evaluation Criteria

 

1. Identifies client and family learning needs in terms of knowledge, skills, and values.
2. Develops behaviorally stated objectives reflecting client and family learning needs.
3. Selects appropriate content. Content should be appropriate, logically organized, and taught at the learner’s comprehension level.
4. Organizes content logically.
5. Chooses appropriate teaching methods and learner activities with recognition of client           preference and learning style.
6. Provides for client and family involvement in development and implementation of teaching plan.
7. Selects appropriate educational materials for use in teaching.
8. Records teaching plan appropriately in the chart.
9. Works as part of a small group in order to accomplish teaching goals.
