You are a data analyst, and you are assisting a local company to analyse a survey containing
data collected on 200 high school students and their scores on various tests, including a video
game and a puzzle. The outcome measure in this analysis is the student’s favourite flavour of
ice-cream such as vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, from which we are going to see what
relationships exists with video game scores (video), puzzle scores (puzzle) and gender. The
company used to use Microsoft Excel to analyse data, but recently the company has
downloaded a free copy of the open-source SPSS data mining software, which they are now
interested to use for data analysis.
As a data analyst, you need to produce a report to evaluate the following and show your
findings through Pie, Bar or Histogram. The Ice_cream.xls and Ice_cream_csv datasets are
available on Moodle.
2.1: How many students like vanilla flavour of ice-cream?
2.2: How many students are Male and Female?
2.3: What are the Mean and Median of participants who likes chocolate and strawberry flavour
ice-cream?

2.4: Using the dataset Ice_cream_csv provided in conjunction with SPSS, give a specific
example of clustering (ex. K-Means). Show your workings with screenshots and clearly
explain your results.
2.5: Explain the most common data mining and text mining methods that can be used in
business with real world examples.
2.6: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using SPSS and Excel using relevant
practical examples and present your discussions in a table.
