Widely considered the greatest scientist of the twentieth century, Albert Ein- stein (1879-1955) is responsible for the theory of relativity. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. In 1936, he wrote the following letter to a sixth-grade student, Phyllis Wright, in response to her question as to whether scientists pray, and if so, what they pray for. How rhetorically effective do you find Einstein’s response? Explain your answer in terms of subject, speaker, audience; context and purpose; and appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos.

1. Find a graphic that shows some aspect of the technology of your topic that interests you.

2. Explore different sources of information on your team’s research topic and select two additional

sources that you believe will be useful for your research report.

3. Write 2-4 paragraphs that describe the illustration, why you chose it (including how it relates to

your topic), and a brief description of the technology – including society’s need for this

technology. Provide enough information that the reader will understand the significance of the

technology in terms of its social benefit.

4. Cite all three sources in the text, and document all three sources in a reference list (using IEEE).
