Why is America’s Teaching Force So White?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a education & teaching writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Hi there!

Question1:

“Why is America’s Teaching Force So White?”

The “Failing at Fairness” link is not available so I switched it out for this fabulous five minute video!

A short summary of this video: “The lack of teacher diversity dates back to the establishment of America’s public school system. A look at the history and some early signs of hope.” This video is packed with history as well as really important current issues. You will hear about all of the amazing and positive reasons kids of color should have teachers of color. But know this as well – White kids also benefit from teachers of color – right? I just read something yesterday about that. White kids learn to be less racist when they have the opportunity to have teachers of color. I will track down the source/citation for this fact but I was reading so many things over tea and toast yesterday morning…Explainer: Why is America’s Teaching Force So White? – YouTube

For Full Points:

  1. Watch the entire video – jot down a note or two as it is packed with information!
  2. List three reasons why it is important to promote and retain teachers of color.
  3. List three reasons why it is important for kids of color to have teachers of color in the classroom.
  4. No sentence minimum requirement for this assignment!

Question2:

Reading/Discussion: #19 “Rendering Latinas Invisible: The Underrepresentation of Latina Role Models in K-12 History Textbooks”

Dr. Angela Leslie sums it in the second paragraph of this important article “There are only a handful of companies in the United States that publish textbooks, which means that students are receiving limited information and perspectives of history”. Dr. Leslie goes on to say “Limited publishers coupled with intentional or unconscious bias also perpetuates the lack of women and women of color in books”. INTENTIONAL OR UNCONSCIOUS BIAS means that students are stuck with false historical narratives – which is a really bad idea! Gives at least three general examples of the bias reported in this article and then specifically addressed a couple of bias regarding Latina representation in history textbooks. Don’t be overwhelmed as there is so much in this article! Don’t forget to respond to two students!

For Full Points:

  1. Read this article carefully, at least one time!
  2. List three general examples of “bias” reported in this article.
  3. Then address two bias specifically targeted at Latina representation in history textbooks.
  4. Don’t forget to respond to two other students’ comments as well.
  5. Please note, I am not putting a minimum of sentences for any of the above. Please be clear with your answers however!

This is an important lecture. We need to understand how important it is to look at the individual as a whole, not just race or gender or ability or class or sexuality…..

Question4:

Readings/Discussion: #10 “Intersectionality in Contemporary Women’s Marches: Possibilities for Social Change

Okay. Read the abstract of this article because it gives you a really good idea of idea of the different waves of feminism as well as the evolution of women’s marches and how important it has been to more publicly acknowledge of important contributions from women of color (who were often disregarded and the first and second waves). Dr. Sujatha Moni (working right here at Sac State!) relays an important and detailed history in this piece and it is worth your time to carefully read the whole thing. Please pull out three areas of interest to you and support your commentary with examples from this article. And then, don’t forget to comment on two other students’ responses to this beautifully written essay!
