“I believe a major factor in why Little Dog does this, is sometimes people struggle with communicating how they truly feel about someone who is significant in their life. It is often sometimes easier to express how you feel about someone through writing, although they may never read it, it’s nice to get it off your mind. It’s also a way to revisit memories, jotting them down and looking back at them to remember what you went through with them. I am personally doing the same as my sister is away in South Korea for a year, so throughout the months I’ve been making a journal of what she has been missing, so when she comes back we can look back at it and reminisce.”

Q3. In Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Little Dog writes a letter to his mother that he knows she will never be able to read. For you assignment, imagine a letter written from one person to an intended recipient that the writer knows is unlikely to ever read the letter (for some reason). Feel free to use this assignment as either a piece of creative nonfiction (i.e., you writing to someone in your own life) or as a piece of fiction (i.e., a character you’ve created writing to another character yoou’ve created). Since Vuong is another one of these nefarious autofiction authors like Luiselli, you are also welcome to follow in his footsteps and write something in the middle of the two. Your assignment should be 2-3 pages.
