Overview

If you decide to see a therapist, it is important to choose someone whose approach to therapy makes sense and is a good fit with your needs and your personality. Each of the three major approaches we learned about in this unit may or may not appeal to you or fit with your personal circumstances. The purpose of this assignment is to explore these therapies from a practical perspective: which therapy or therapies would be a good fit for you?

Instructions

Review the information that you have collected on the various types of therapy discussed in this unit. Based on what you have learned about the different types of therapies, respond to one of the prompts below. Turn in your initial response by the indicated due date so that you will have time to read and respond to your classmates’ posts. There is enough information in this unit to respond to the prompt without using outside sources. If you would like to research this topic in more detail, please feel free to do so, just make sure to cite your source of information. An informal citation (such as putting the name of the source or the URL in parentheses after the source) is fine. Here’s a Psych Central article Links to an external site.that you may find useful.

In responding to the prompt, please note that you do not have to talk about specific issues that you may be having, unless you are comfortable with doing so. It is okay to talk on a more general level about how the chosen type of therapy fits with your personality, way of thinking about the world, way of relating to others, and so on. For example, I personally would be unlikely to choose a Psychoanalytic therapist. For me, Psychoanalysis seems too time consuming, depends too much on another person’s interpretation of what I am saying.

Write a response to one of these prompts. A complete response should address all of the parts of the prompt that you have chosen, and should be at least six sentences long.

2. Which type of therapy do you feel is the poorest fit for you? Choose at least two practices or ideas that are used in this therapy that you feel are a poor fit for you personally. Briefly explain these concepts and discuss why you feel they are a poor fit.
3. Many therapists take an eclectic approach to therapy, in which they include ideas and practices from several different theories. If you would prefer an eclectic approach, choose practices or ideas from at least two different types of therapy. Briefly explain these concepts and discuss why you would want them as a part of your therapy.

By Friday, December 3, at 11:59 pm, please reply to two classmates’ posts in a way that meaningfully adds to the conversation by providing additional information or explanation, constructively suggesting corrections, asking questions, or providing alternative or supporting points of view.

GRADING POLICY

• You are expected to post your initial response to a discussion board prompt by the the due date indicated on each discussion board. Late submissions will not receive credit unless you have a valid, documented reason for missing the due date.
• You are also expected to reply to at least two posts on the discussion board by the day of the Unit test. These replies are part of the assignment. You will not receive full credit for the assignment unless you have a meaningful reply to at least two posts.
• Making a submission that is substantially copied from an outside source without acknowledging the source is plagiarism. This is a violation of the student code of conduct. You will receive a zero for the assignment and may face other consequences, depending on the severity of the violation. The syllabus describes in detail the consequences for plagiarism.
• I check the discussion board on a regular basis. If there are corrections or clarifications that you need to make I will reply to your post within three days. You may reply to my post with your clarifications or corrections as one of your two replies to posts.
• After the discussion board is completed (day of the unit test) I will assign grades for the discussion boards based on your initial posts and any corrections that you have made based on feedback from others in the class (me, my TA, other students).
