St Louis

In Chapter 11, Mask tells us about what streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reveal about race in America. She spotlights the city of St. Louis and the problem of segregation. She notes that St. Louis, Missouri is “still one of the most segregated cities in America’ and “racial restrictions and failed city policies” have further marginalized St. Louis’ black community.

But St. Louis is far from the only city where segregation still exists. Dallas, Texas is another major American city that is largely segregated.

For this lesson’s discussion in 150 – 250 words:

  • Reflect and Write: Take a look at the graphics on the Pew Research Center (Links to an external site.) website. Accompanying the article, you will see two maps and an additional graph. Study these images and try to draw some conclusions about the possible implications of the data revealed in the maps and graph. Consider in your response the following questions:
    • Where do you think most businesses are located?
    • How might this data give insight into the quality of life for those living in the gray areas compared to the blue ones?
    • Think about access to amenities like grocery stores, health care clinics, or parks. If you are really curious, look at Dallas on Google Maps and get a visual sense of what the city looks like. This might give you ideas, too. (Here is a video from WFAA news titled “Banking Below 30” (Links to an external site.) which addresses some of the issues in Chapter 11 that are specific to Dallas. This might help inform some of your thoughts and assertions.)
