What is an Abstract?

For this portfolio development activity you will:

  • Develop your Home page of you wix website.

Your Home page will be created as an Abstract for your portfolio. This should be one of the last pages you create for the portfolio.

What is an Abstract?

An abstract is short, between 150-250 words (generally speaking) and provides an overview of a larger work. It is not a summary of the larger work; rather, it extracts the essence of a work and its contributions. If all a reader does is read the abstract of a work, they should have a sense of what the work is about and what is significant/important about it.

For Your Portfolio…

Your Home page should capture the reader’s attention and provide a brief overview of what is important about the larger work of the portfolio. In this respect, you will be writing an abstract. You will want to take a bird’s eye view (panoramic view) of your portfolio. You and your peers have all worked with the same writing prompts for the portfolio, but you have cultivated your portfolios in different ways. So, your abstract should be specific to your work. Ask yourself: What are the larger implications of my portfolio?

FAQ: How is the Home page Abstract different from the Introduction page?

The Introduction page serves to provide an overview of sections in the portfolio. You Home page/Abstract provides a critical, mindful, and meaningful introduction to the portfolio holistically.

Student Examples:

Having an example means that you have the ability to assess it. Each example provided for the portfolio has areas of strength but their strengths are not always consistent. You will have to use the assignment prompt for pages of the portfolio to determine areas of success and areas that are not as successful. Make sure that you are working closely with the page prompts!

Example 1:

This portfolio details my authorship development via a guided set of assignments detailing various aspects of composition. It is heavily informed by an analysis of both context and genre, which became the guiding frameworks for my understanding of writing more broadly. In particular, it culminates in the development of a personal writing theory that cites audience, purpose, and medium as core considerations for all writing. In this way, writing is highly contextualized and removed from the broader belief that writing is an inherent and transferable skillset. It further details the construction of genre as a specific set of contextual factors, popularized through historical use. This leads to the conceptualization of genre as a contextual archetype so well-established as to have its own name. These factors can be adhered to with a varying degree of rigidity, leading the theory to additionally encompass the notion that genre is simultaneously fixed and fluid.

Example 2:

This portfolio thoroughly exhibits the developmental stages and processes undergone to orchestrate a complete understanding of what writing is and means to me specifically and personally. This has been achieved through numerous writing prompts examining texts and other media from various authors and creators.

Additionally, I have examined each of these works created by myself and provided further details on both my ideas and reflection on the topic at that time as well as how these writing activities have impacted my development.

A large part of my newer understanding of writing acknowledges it’s infinity and my contemplation will be the same. While these personal reflections serve as an almost conclusion to this specific work, they serve as the basis for my future evolution of thought.

Example 3:

This portfolio encompasses a plethora of concepts that I have evaluated in my UWRT-1104 course to showcase my evolution in the writing process. While this portfolio is demonstrating the overarching concepts of writing, the primary focus is failure and how I came to develop this understanding and apply it into the other concepts of writing. It centers around how I reflected on failure and how I was able to gradually become more confident in my writing by understanding that failure has the capacity to make writing better through practice. By developing this new philosophy of failure I was able to adjust and adapt to varying contexts, purposes and audiences while simultaneously discovering my own unique ideology within my writing.
