As in the previous assignment, please write three rules, in this case for computer professionals like us.

1) What group of computer professionals are you writing ethics for? (As an example, programmers of a pay-to-win game)? [0 points]

2) What is the “good” in this ethical system? (In my example it might be a huge player base, many of whom wish they had the skill to win, and are willing to pay to make up for it) [2 points]

3) What 3 rules exist in your ethical system that promote the good you have selected (In my example rules might be that the game must have only features that are fun and not grindy; that the game must get harder after a short period (one week); and that must be elements that can be “bought” that are not offensive to players, but give a critical advantage worth paying for) [3 points]

As in the prior assignment, your rules must be imperatives (you will…) and not facts (games have…) or benefits (it’s great that…)

Assignment 2

Describe the topic of your presentation.

Make it short (1 paragraph).

I am looking for an ethical subject that can be argued both ways – so, for example,stealing films online while burning orphanages will not work, since there’s no way to argue that this is ethical. Similarly, hacking the IRS and disabling their computer system is entirely ethical, and will not be approved for that reason.

It must be a computer subject. This means that a computer is not only used, but necessary – without the presence of the computer, no ethical issue would be presented. To put this differently, dropping a computer on someone’s head and killing them does not work for your subject, because the computer could with no change to the problem be replaced with a car tire, but remotely disabling a safeguard that prevents a weight from dropping might be.

On your paper and/or presentation, you will lose points if you do not at least discuss both sides (ethical, unethical). You may choose to conclude in favor of one or the other view, but you must be able to discuss both.

Assignment 3

you need to do 8 slight PowerPoint presentation

8 slides (which can be created in powerpoint or a similar program that can back up
your presentation.
You will submit your slides in PDF form – print to PDF, for example, works from most
microsoft products.
Grades will be deducted as follows (out of 5, you can lose these repeatedly, for
example, if you try to hand me a 1 page presentation):
-1 for each page less than 8
-1 if you don’t have a title page with your name and a short (12 words or less)
description of the action you are testing ethically. This is one of the 8 required pages
-1 if you fail to give an ethical standard, and specific provisions of that standard (the
often hilarious words of GW Bush and the golden rule are not ethical standards; Kantian
or ACM ethics, for example, are)
-1 if you present only one side (ethical OR unethical) in your analysis. I should have
refused any subject that can’t be at least argued both ways.
