What findings/recommendations from the presentations and/or sources provided resonated with you the most, and how do you think Kinesiologists can engage in work directed at improving media representation of women in sport or developing strategies to create more play and food oases in underserved communities?

Access to healthy foods and physical activity is a determinant of a healthy lifestyle. The population that are exposed on food and physical activity are underserved communities. What I found interesting from Jesse Lane and Brett Davis article was the physical activity deserts. I am quite familiar with food and healthcare deserts but was unfamiliar with physical activity deserts. Understanding physical activity deserts is important because adequate exercise is important into living a healthy lifestyle. According to (Jesse & Brett, 2022), rural communities had higher levels of obesity than suburbs. Jesse and Brett (2022) further stated this is due to large travel times to access a park. Additionally, minority communities tend to engage in physical activity less and have poorer quality of foods.

The findings of this research, it indicates that accessible parks are most found in wealthier neighborhoods. These findings indicate that urban planning and development have a huge impact on one’s livelihood. For example, in Palo Alto, the 101 highway separates the town into two distinct neighborhoods. On the bayside, you have east Palo Alto which is a majority Hispanic community and on the other side, you have a wealthier suburb community with homes worth millions of dollars. In east Palo Alto the quality of parks is much lower. For example, East Palo Alto does not have any artificial fields while in Palo Alto you can find multiple turf fields. This is a clear indication of disparities between both communities less than a mile apart.

As kinesiologists, we can influence urban planners and designers. To create accessible parks that have proper facilities that encourage physical activity. Examples to make an accessible and enjoyable park can be planting trees to create shade to building multiple sports fields. When developing parks, a Kinesiologist can inform urban planners of facilities that would engage physical activity. Furthermore, creating travel paths to the park. Travel paths can be biking lanes, sidewalks, etc. This will encourage physical activity and at the park.

As a result, resources need to be diverted to underserved communities. Most importantly facilities need to be appropriate.
