What does a socially just and equitable school look like?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a english report and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Write a formal academic essay in response to the following brief:

What does a socially just and equitable school look like? Explore one or more aspects of each of the following three features: a support structure, an aspect of pedagogy or the curriculum, and, values, commitments and beliefs that you might find in such a school. What are the challenges and dilemmas that these features present for achieving a just and equitable school?

We expect that you will integrate academic literature and policy literature into your discussion, including but beyond what we have addressed in the seminars.

1.The Criteria

Your essay should be 2,000 words (+/- 10%) in length and address the following criteria:

  • Describes how support structures can facilitate the creation of a socially just and equitable school, summarising key aspects of relevant policy and legislation.
  • Identifies and explains ways in which pedagogy and decisions around the curriculum can play an important role in pursuit of social justice and equity.
  • Explains how attitudes, commitments and beliefs underpin just and equitable professional decision-making and action, making links to the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Standards for Registration, and to Human Rights law.
  • Outlines some key dilemmas and challenges faced by teachers and schools in pursuit of social justice and equity.
  • Clarity and accuracy of writing: Writing is fluent, and with accurate punctuation, spelling, and grammar. APA 7 referencing conventions are followed.

2. Guidance from the module leader

Your essay needs to include the following parts. You may find it helpful to follow this as a structure, or you can decide to merge distinct parts. Whatever you choose to do, signpost clearly that you are addressing each part, using well-crafted topic sentences and subheadings. This will help your marker to see where you have addressed the marking criteria.

It is important to refer to academic and other sources for any claims that you make.

Please note that each of these sections will likely have multiple paragraphs.

  • Support structures
  • Values, commitments and beliefs
What national frameworks or policies shape the response to injustice and inequality in our schools?

What provision is made in or through schools to redress certain inequalities?

  • What grassroots initiatives in schools help to support children?
This part is about the systems and structures that help schools to address inequality and injustice.

Some are part of national initiatives, such as free school meals, through to some that are owned at a local school level, such as informal pupil support groups. Getting it Right for Every Child is the umbrella structure for children’s services.

How can the strengths that diverse students bring to the classroom be recognised and allowed to flourish?

  • How can culturally responsive teaching enhance the curriculum?
This part is about the action that can be taken at a classroom level – the broad pedagogical considerations that are responses to inequality and injustice. It is also about the way in which the curriculum can reinforce or redress these issues.

Are teachers adequately prepared?

How are contemporary circumstances affecting schools, teachers and their pupils?

  • Can there be a distinction between private and professional beliefs and values?

Schools are constantly adapting to changing circumstances. They are constrained in many ways and must make decisions about how to allocate scarce resources.
