1. Watch the TEDx Sydney talk entitled Skateboarding in Afghanistan by Skatistan founder Oliver Percovich.
   • This inspiring video provides an example of how the activity of skateboarding is addressing important development needs in Afghanistan.
   • Most notably, skateboarding is used to motivate young people to attend classes in the associated learning center.
   • It is also promoting inclusion and gender empowerment.
   • Simply put, Skatistan is pretty cool and it is accomplishing meaningful outcomes related to sustainable development
2. For this assignment, you are asked to find or create your own “Skatistan,” that is, a recreation, park, or tourism business that is promoting educational outcomes in a way that also addresses development needs for the participants, communities, and environments where the activity takes place.
   • You can select a business with which you are already familiar.
   • It can be a business that you identify using internet searches, Youtube, Google, etc.
   • You can create a high-level plan (idea) for recreation, park, or tourism business that is promoting educational outcomes in a way that also addresses development needs for the participants, communities, and environments where the activity takes place
3. Prepare a 2-page paper review of the business you selected or conceptualized.
   • You should try to draw on the themes from Sachs Chapter 8 on education as well as any other chapters (or lectures) that may be relevant to the project you’ve identified.
   • Suggested Outline
     • Begin your review with a succinct summary of the business. What form of recreation or leisure is present, and what makes it fun?
     • Then, proceed to describe the ways that the project is addressing educational needs, either through formal or informal educational channels.
       • This is where you might pay the closest attention to ways that the film addresses material from the Sachs chapter that was assigned this week.
     • Next, elaborate on other sustainability issues that your project addresses.
       • This may include the topics and subtopics covered to date in our class such as economic inequalities, poverty traps, social inclusion, governance, environment, and climate change.
       • Finally, conclude with your personal reactions to this project.
         • For instance, what made you select this project?
         • Why did it resonate with you?
         • Which of your background experiences may have caused you to gravitate to this particular project?
         • What is the single biggest lesson that your project provides?
       • If you are talking about an existing program, try to locate some prepared information by the program such as Youtube or other online clips about your project.
