Throughout the course learnings the importance of managerial support for health and safety initiatives has been emphasised. In particular, we have noted the importance of a positive safety climate in the realization of safety-related goals. Imagine you are the newly hired HRM in a manufacturing organization that currently does not place a high degree of value on health and safety. In other words, the organization has a negative safety climate. Top executives have indicated that they would like this situation to change, and they tell you that part of your job is to improve safety performance in the organization.

What are the first three initiatives that you would launch to improve the safety climate of this organization and explain why or how these initiatives would do this? Think about the 3 conditions for individuals to work safely and how this translates into safety performance. Use the table to respond. (maximum 300 words per initiative).

Don Baker is concerned for the safety of his fellow Regina Transit workers as he says two bus drivers have been physically assaulted within the past few weeks.

Further, the city is “not even acknowledging that their own employees are being assaulted,” said Baker, the president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 588.

He says bus drivers endure verbal abuse on a regular basis. In his own work as a bus driver, he estimates a customer lashes out at least weekly.

He acknowledges physical assaults have been rare, but two drivers have been assaulted in the past five weeks.

In the first case, while ordering a verbally abusive passenger off the bus, Baker says the passenger attempted to steal the driver’s backpack. A “tussle” ensued after the driver grabbed his backpack.

Afterwards, says Baker, Regina Transit fired the driver because “they didn’t like the way he treated that customer.”

The union is grieving the dismissal.

Two weeks ago, Baker says another driver left his vehicle at a red light, smashed out the bus driver’s window, punched him and tried to pull him out of the window.

City of Regina director of transit services Brad Bells would not speak to the alleged assaults because “it’s employee matters.”

Baker says he has video of both assaults, but would not share them with the Leader-Post.

The city should have “more interest in protecting its employees,” said Baker. “These two assaults have sent a message to them that ‘what am I supposed to do now? Am I going to lose my job because I have to defend myself?’ ”

Bells said assaults on bus drivers are “very rare” and have not increased this year, but didn’t have specific numbers.

In Winnipeg, undercover transit officers ride the buses as a further deterrent for things getting out of hand.

Though most passengers are well behaved, said Baker, a serious assault is “going to happen one day,” because “you’re sitting in the seat … You can’t see it coming because you’re focused on the road.”

Bells said the city has considered installing driver shields, but heard feedback from most drivers that they’re not warranted.

“We’re in a very nice community. I don’t think we have the issues like major cities have; we have very few incidents of assault on a bus operator,” said Bells.

Welcome to Well-Mart!

Well-Mart is a new, medium-sized retail outlet specializing in the sale of health food, supplements, and lifestyle products. The store has just had its grand opening and initial consumer interest seems to be strong—the store is busy from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Currently the store has 32 employees, the majority of whom (20) work in the retail part of the store. Their main duties are restocking shelves, staffing the cash registers, and assisting customers. Two of these employees are designated as “lead hands” responsible for overseeing the checkouts and the store floor. Seven employees work in the back warehouse and are responsible for unloading deliveries, storing stock, and preparing stock to be moved out onto the floor, one of whom is a lead hand and responsible for the warehouse. Finally, five employees work in administration including the store manager, the assistant manager, the payroll officer, and an administrative assistant. You are the fifth administrative employee, hired to be the store’s health and safety manager. In this role you are responsible for providing support and advice, maintaining records, and evaluating various aspects of performance as they relate to health and safety. Store cleaning is contracted out to a commercial cleaning company who come in after hours.

In your initial meeting with the store manager, she is clear about your responsibilities. “Health and safety is critical for us,” she told you, “We based our entire business on promoting well-being and we would be remiss if we did not value the well-being of our employees. I have to tell you though, it’s a tough sell. Most of our employees have experience in retail and many have expressed the view that retail work is safe and we do not need a health and safety program. After a few weeks you receive the following email:

To: You, OHS Manager

From: Store Manager

Re: Incident in the Warehouse Hi there,

I know that you have heard about Jerry in the warehouse hurting his back this morning. He’s at the hospital now and we are waiting to see how bad it is. I think we need to get to the bottom of exactly what happened so that we

can ensure that it won’t happen again. Can you put together a plan to investigate what went on? Thanks. If you can send that along in an email, we can then start documenting the process.

Create an email response to responding to the above, be sure to include the following (300 word maximum with proper business memo formatting):

1.What are the intent and steps of the incident investigation?

2.What are legal requirements to investigate the incident?

3.Which factor, or agency, is most closely associated with the cause of this incident?
