- Evidence-Based Practice Project (EBP) (40%) – This is a layered project consisting of several small steps in the evidence-based practice process. All of the following assignments may be handed in as a draft first to gain additional feedback, but in a few instances below, drafts are required (but ungraded). Final submission for each of the 5 parts will be graded
using a 3-level rubric, Mastery – 10 points, Standard – 7 points or Below Standard – 5 points which includes keypoints that must be addressed. This assignment will be uploaded to your ePortfolio. These are individual assignments combined to create your final EBP project.
- PICOT question – identify P, I, C, O, and possibly T in relation to your area of clinical interest. Using the provided template, select which is most appropriate for your clinical question. This assignment will include peer review and comments and suggestions should focus on encouraging critical thinking skills and improvement of professional writing for the nursing discipline.
- Search strategies – Include key words, databases, parameters (i.e. years, and any other filters), Boolean terms, number of hits, and #in final pool of evidence. Evidence should be current, within the past 5-7
- Table of evidence (TOE) – Include a minimum of 2 research articles from your final pool of evidence. Complete all columns in designated template and if information is not found in the paper, please note n/a. For example, if the study does not include a
- Synthesis – In this assignment you will identify 2 common themes or categories from the articles in your table of evidence. For instance, the articles may address safety concerns or finances. These themes are your sub-headers. Using APA format, writing style, and correct in-text citation compose a synthesis of the articles that focuses on the themes and compares/contrasts the different studies. A draft is required and will be ungraded but will provide feedback for final submission.
- Poster and presentation – This is a culmination of all previous sections of the project. You will put all of the gathered information, i.e. PICOT, search strategy, table of evidence (partial), synthesis (bulleted points) into a poster template. A draft is required and will be ungraded but will provide feedback for final submission. You will present this poster virtually to your peers who will review your performance according to a predesigned rubric in addition to a faculty review. Peer review comments and suggestions should focus on encouraging critical thinking skills and improvement of professional writing for the nursing
Each of these steps/assignments will be explained through course readings and faculty instruction throughout the semester. Templates for each will be provided at the beginning of the semester in addition to multiple resources and examples. Templates are also found in the recommended text by Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019).
- Critical Appraisal (25%) – This process will be demonstrated through readings and examples both individually and through group activities. The final assignment will include a critical appraisal of one faculty selected research article using a provided template that is specific to the type of study. These templates are posted on D2L. The faculty member will identify the type of study, so you will be able to use the appropriate template. The final assignment is individual and it is “open book” so you may use the examples, your book and D2L resources to complete
- Citi Human Subjects Training (15%) – This assignment is online and can be started and stopped throughout the semester up until the due date. It is focused on the protection of human subjects in research studies, but also applies to the ethical use of patient information in evidence-based practice or quality improvement
See information in D2L module 2
- Discussion Board (s) (20%) – All students are expected to actively participate in the discussion boards online. You are expected to be conversant and respectful of others’ viewpoint(s) when analyzing and responding to the topic under discussion. Students should respond to questions/prompts and discuss issues providing evidence for your answers. Use APA format and provide additional references to support your rationale when responding to discussion boards. The instructor will provide a review of APA format and style through online resources at the beginning of the semester. Use of the Writing Center is also strongly encouraged. Students who are not actively participating in class discussion or discussion boards may be counseled by the instructor and lose points on this portion of your
