The 1960s and 1970s were tumultuous times for the United States. Several domestic and
international events caused many Americans to question the nature of their country’s spirit
and the dependability of their government.
Using Material From Your Readings:
1. Making reference to two specific incidences described in your reading, explain how
America’s faith in itself was tested during the 1960s and 1970s. These incidents can both
be domestic, or both international, or one can be domestic and one international.
2. Do you think Americans are now more or less positive about their country now than they
were back in this period, and why do you think this?
