Discussion Prompt:

Religious Freedom is part of the US Constitution, as such it requires much thought as well. Atheists seem to be the most persecuted group in the US – here are some questions to ponder. Choose 2 to answer:

  • The freedom of religion is a right included in the U.S. Constitution. It allows people to practice any religion in public or private without being persecuted. How does this policy of religious freedom compare with how people are allowed to practice (or not practice) religion in your country of origin?
  • Should everyone in a country have the right to practice any religion they wish? Why or why not?
  • Do you think the government should have the ability to “manage” religious expression? Should the government should be guided by religious principles? Why or why not?
  • Do atheists have any special problems in your country (if your origin country is not the US)?
  • In 2009 a campaign started which promoted the slogan: “God probably doesn’t exist, now stop worrying and get on with your life.” What is your opinion of this?
  • The well-known atheist Richard Dawkins once said: “We are all atheists about 99% of the gods which have ever existed – some of us just go one god further.” What is your opinion of this statement?
  • Many atheists maintain they do not believe in God because there is no evidence God exists. What is your opinion?
  • Do you think people who don’t believe in God or gods can live good lives? Where do you think people who don’t believe in God or gods get their moral compass?

I strongly believe in the separation of church and state. I think religion can have a strong hold on people, and can influence the way they. Of course most religions preach the practice of having good morals and being good people, but this isn’t the influence on behavior that I am talking about. I am more so referring to how some members of a certain religion treat other people who are not members of their religion or who are members of another religion. There is a lot of religious discrimination, and the risks of religious discrimination increases as one religion becomes more dominant than the other. Also, history has proven time and time again that when religion becomes too powerful, oftentimes members of that religion become hypocritical and consumed by the power they hold rather than practicing the actual morals and philosophies of the religion. Lastly, just because a religion says so does not mean the majority of the population or everyone in the population agrees. This is evident in the topic of abortion. A big argument against abortion is that it is against the Bible. If Christianity held government power, I believe that this would be unfair to those being governed yet do not believe in the Bible. And the beliefs of the Bible completely disregard other circumstances such as conception from rape, endangerment of the mother’s life due to complications, scientific proof of differences between fetuses and babies, and the trauma a child can potentially have if born into a family that was not prepared to have him or did not want him. Controversial topics like this are exactly why it is important to separate religion and government.

I believe that we, as Americans, are so lucky to live in a place where we won’t be persecuted based on our religious beliefs. Of course religious discrimination still occurs but we can live with the knowledge that it is against the law and against our country’s constitution to be forbidden to practice whatever religion we please with fear of persecution. I am from the Philippines and the majority of the country is Catholic because we were colonized by Spain. Of course we have other religions due to the geographical location of the country; including Islam, Christianity, Protestantism, Buddhism. The United States also colonized the Philippines, and before giving the country its independence the US modeled the Philippine Constitution based on the American one; this means that the Philippines, too, has freedom of religion. However, due to Catholicism and and Christianity being the dominant groups, other religions also face discrimination.

Discussion 2

The freedom of religion is a right included in the U.S. Constitution. It allows people to practice any religion in public or private without being persecuted. The great thing about the US is that there are a lot of cultures and religions coming together as one. In the Philippines, majority of the Filipinos are Catholic, usually you find them on the northern and central part of the Philippines but once we go south there’s much more Muslim presence in the area. From my experience, growing up our families were more into setting Catholicism into our everyday lives. The country itself does not only have Catholic holidays but also Muslim holidays and people would be off on all those holidays. Throughout the years, the country has been very open to learning and accepting newer religions but they will still stay true to their history of celebrating religious holidays.

In 2009 a campaign started which promoted the slogan: “God probably doesn’t exist, now stop worrying and get on with your life.” What is your opinion of this?

I think that people have different opinions and beliefs and that they should respect others and their religion. Just because the people who promoted this does not believe in God, I do not think that we should be persuaded on their opinions. They have the right to say what they want but our roots of our belief system have been placed upon us by our family and if you drift away from that, it is also their decision. We are not here to brain wash our religion into a single person. I think people have the choice to venture out. Even some countries do their religion differently than others and I think that we should learn about each other’s ways instead of putting people down. A good thing about in today’s society we are learning and accepting our differences.
