The empirical Pilot Study is intended both to provide a feasibility study for the proposed research

8. Empirical Pilot Study

The empirical Pilot Study is intended both to provide a feasibility study for the proposed research and also to pre-test the proposed research instrument or interview schedule. The submission of this assessment will comprise a report on the pilot study.

Criteria

  1. Does the report provide a clear statement of the purpose of the pilot study (and has the Ethics Approval form been completed – see Appendix E of Handbook)? Not quite as the RQ or intention is confusing.

  1. Does the report set out the proposed research design and assess its feasibility? Not quite as there is no description of the total population.

  1. Does the report identify the reasons for the selection of particular research instruments or interview protocols (or other techniques used for collecting data) and does it assess the adequacy of the instruments or schedule? Not quite. A table showing where the question shave been drawn might help. Does it make recommendations for the further development of the instrument or schedule? No recommendations?

  1. Does the report identify potential methodological, resource or logistical issues for the planned research? NO and it would help to do so.

  1. Does the report identify the proposed sampling frame or recruitment approaches and does it identify any potential issues with these approaches including estimation of sample size?

  1. Does the report comment on the process of collection of data and does it clearly identify how the data was analysed? Just that thematic conding / NVIVO was used. More elaboration.

  1. Does the report identify any implications for the proposed techniques of data analysis in the planned study, whilst recognising the limitations of any analysis on the pilot study data?

  1. Does the report comment on and make recommendations for further developing the proposed research question, research design and research plan? No, there is no mention of whether the respondents understood everything…

  1. Does the report include an assessment of any limitations of the pilot study? I don’t think so.

Word limit:      3,000 words (+20% / -10%)
