Communities are composed around a core, which are the people and subsystems also known as Social Determinants of Health (SDH). A community assessment typically starts with a windshield survey where the community subsystems are explored. The physical environment is often the first subsystem assessed. This assignment is focused on providing guidelines to help health professional students identify characteristics in the physical environment that can impact the health of a community. The Social Determinants of Health include the general cleanliness of the community, available services such as medical, pharmaceutical, food, housing, recreation, communication, community support such as religious organizations, health clubs, and transportation. Communities, groups of people, or individuals lacking in any of the SDH categories face a disparity in their ability to thrive within their environment. What you see and what you do not see that should be present are crucial to the environmental assessment. Mayor Franklin Hill may be able to provide additional insight into the community’s growth and development. Let’s begin our Windshield Survey, Part 1.
