In January 2011, a Florida mother was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after authorities say she killed her two children because “they talked back to her.” According to the reports, she shot her son twice in the head on their way home from soccer practice and then parked her minivan in the garage of their home. She then went upstairs and shot her daughter in the back of her head and face as she was doing homework on her computer.

1. Should this mother be eligible for the death penalty?

2. To what degree do we reasonably seek to hold the mentally ill responsible for criminal behavior?
