1-Since I have an HBO Max subscription, I took advantage of the opportunity to watch Elvis Presley: The Searcher documentary. I learned a few new things about Elvis after watching this documentary, one being that Elvis was one of the first to fuse the best elements of African American or black blues and white bluegrass. Another amazing fact is just how dedicated and hardworking he was with his music; not only did he spend so much time creating and recording music with other talented artists, but he also went out and performed night after night for many periods of time. One more fun fact is that Elvis originally started creating country music, but after a little while of that he began to be influenced by many other genres of music that were new and popular at the time, and so he felt inspired to create his own version of country infused with blues and bluegrass, some would even say he helped shape what pop culture is like today. A lot of people at the time felt like Elvis was so radical that he was a threat to their understanding of country music.

.

.2-Behind the Music: The Day the Music Died became a devastating event which took the lives of three talented rock and roll musicians. Dramatically uncomfortable conditions led the lead singer of Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes to charter a plane during tough winter conditions. Unknowingly, the pilot at the time did not have the qualifications to fly in these conditions, creating the death of these four people in 1959 and a change in music history. “Ting-a-Ling” became their popular hit during this time. They did not have too many recorded together as a band because the accident occurred on their first tour. Most of Buddy Holly’s songs were previously made through the Crickets. His musical ways directly developed from gospel music, R and B acts, and country music which were typically shown to others at his local high school he had previously attended. .

.3-The documentary that I ended up watching was HBO Max’s documentary of Elvis Presley known as: ‘Elvis Presley: The Searcher’. Some key events that the document outlines is that Presley began absorbing musical influence at a young age, even those that were not musical. His parents loved to sing and participate in church choir. He also got influence from tying himself to more praisal songs from black churches with their gospel music and sermons and going to clubs on Beale Street in Memphis. He had help of his coming to fame from his now-known controversial manager, Colonel Parker. Parker is known as controversial because he both helped and hindered Presley in multiple ways; ultimately getting Presley recognition but at the cost of taking a lot of Presley’s income, making a lot of choices Presley could not rebel and more. The documentary also highlights Presley’s stage presence, charisma and vocalist capabilities; he would “ignite” stages, hype up crowds, and continue to do so stamping him as a “musical ace” of rock as a whole. Some of this also came from his ability to compose his music himself without the use of many duplications of classic songs. Another key event would have to be the fact that Presley served in the military for roughly 2 years where he ended up meeting his wife Priscilla Beaulieu, but the time in the army served as uncertainty for PResley since he was alone and was not sure how life back in the States would be when he would eventually return. Furthermore, he also starred on many musical-stringed movies and was actually thinking about going into the acting scene before settling as an artist; ultimately leading into his Las Vegas residency. That said, throughout the early to mid seventies, the documentary states that Presley was performing over 100 shows a year. In doing so, he was more attached to drugs and falling outs with Beaulieu had quickened and multiplied. From these falling outs, a song known as ‘Burning Love’ was produced and was, although straying away from rock and roll, a hit nonetheless While he died in August of 1978 due to his abuse of those prescription drugs, he produced a few songs back in October of 1976 before dying. Those including: “Hurt” and “Waydown.” Lastly, throughout the documentary lots of his popular songs played, such as: Suspicious Minds, Craw-Fever, 68 Comeback Special, and more.

.4- The documentary I chose was Chuck Berry: Rock Legends on YouTube. I absolutely loved it; I learned so many new things from this video. Chuck Berry was born on October 18, 1926, in St. Louis Missouri. He was known as the ” Father of Rock and Roll “. In 1944 he was arrested and jailed for armed robbery. He was sentenced to 10 years and was sent to a reformatory for young men. It was there that he formed a singing group. He ended up getting out early from prison for good behavior.

On his 21st birthday he got married and had his first child. To support his family, he got a job as janitor and a factory worker in a car plant and later worked as a beautician. He did so good in these jobs that he was able to buy a cottage for his family. While working these jobs he was still playing as a musician at clubs while getting experience in performing.

In 1955 he created Maybellene and it was the #1 on The Billboards. In 1958 he releases “Johnny Be Good” a Rock and Roll classic. It tells the story of what it’s like to grow up in America in those times. These songs took him into Cinemas and movie theaters making him a big deal. He later opens named Club Bandstand. It was the first racially integrated club in St. Louis. It knocked down all boundaries, his music was for everyone, it was truly universal.

In 1959 he was in tour in El Paso and there he met a 14-year-old girl who was possibly working as a prostitute. Chuck Berry offered her a job and it landed him in prison. The crime he committed was taking her across state lines and he got 5 years. While Chuck was in prison his music became more famous and in 1963 the Beach Boys borrowed the song ” Sweet Little Sixteen” and remade it into ” Surfin’ USA” without giving him any credit.

In 1964 he released “Nadine” and ” You Never Can Tell”. Fun Fact! One of my favorite movies is Pulp Fiction and I had no idea he was the one who sang the song in the famous dance scene with John Travolta and Uma Thurman. In 1986 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His last album was October 2016 including Gary Clerk Jr, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, Two of his children and one of his great grandchildren. Sadly, on March 18, 2017, Chuck Berry died at the age of 90 from Cardiac Arrest. He influenced artist like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen. Chuck Berry was one the most important and significant Rock and Roll artists of his time contributing to the growth and evolution of Rock and Roll music.

.5- Chuck Berry Documentary

Chuck Berry, a musician artist, was also known as the “Father of Rock and Roll”. He went to a segregated school as a young boy, that’s where he gave his first performance in an assembly. He would bend strings to make different sounds and add some country parts into his song to make an influence into rock and roll as well as an influence towards a new sound which made the audience love him. He went to Chess Records and that’s where he made his single song “Maybelline”. This song was a huge hit and became one of his biggest hits as his first record. This song was a bit hit because there were different noises which became to first look and rock and roll music. Another big record was “Roll Over Beethoven”. This record would be known as rock and roll classics and again when first recorded, it was thew new face of Rock and Roll. The overall influence of Chuck Berry was the help of inventing what we know today as rock n roll. He expressed his life lessons and struggles better than anyone else with different noises then anybody had ever heard.

6- I decided to watch the documentary, Elvis Presley: The Searcher. One thing I learned is that he took inspiration from African American style music, having grown up around it as a kid. A lot of that influence coming from when he would go to church and he would be able to watch the church quire sing. In his later years, when he became famous, he got a manager named Colonel Parker who he had almost a family like bond with, but at the same time, Parker was basically using him and stealing his money. Near the end of his career, he started doing shows in Las Vegas, where he was doing so many shows that he relied heavily on drugs to get him onto the stage. These drugs were his eventual downfall in slowly ruining his marriage, and was he reason for his slowly declining health. He eventually died in mid August of 1977, crushing the hearts of his fans, but leaving a lasting memory in the history of rock and roll.

.7- The documentary I chose for this discussion is, “Chuck Berry: Rock Legends” on the You Tube provided. I grew up hearing most of his songs and was excited to learn more about him. Chuck Berry was born in St. Louis Missouri on October 18th, 1926, and would later be nicknamed the “Father of Rock and Roll”. He is most known for his amazing skills playing guitar solos on his songs and was a genius in his craft. His biggest hits were, “Roll Over Beethoven”, “Maybellene”, “Rock And Roll Music”, and “Johnny B. Goode”. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame started in 1986 and Berry would go on to be among one of the first musicians to be inducted in it. Rolling Stone magazine cited him on many of their “greatest of all time” lists and he was ranked fifth in 2004 and 2011 on their “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time.” He is well known for redeveloping and redefining rhythm and blues which is how we know rock and roll to be to this day. He sadly went to prison in the late 1950’s after having a few run ins with the law, but continued persuing his musical career and dreams. He continued throughout his career after prison to remain an established star, traveling the world and continued to redefine rock and roll throught his career. He was sadly found unresponsive in his home in his 90’s.I’m glad I was able to learn more about him and even added some of his songs to my apple playlist, bringing back some good childhood memories of mine.

.8- I watched Behind the Music: The Day Music Died. On February 3, 1959, three of the top musicians in music died in a devastating plane crash. The three singers on the plane were Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson, and Ritchie Valens. This event got its name because of the song “American Pie” by Don McLean when he first referenced the day with the nickname. Buddy Holly was a big star in rock and roll in the 50s with his most iconic song being “That will Be the Day.” J.P Richardson was known by the alias “The Big Bopper” because he named himself after a big dance during his time in high school and Ritchie Valens was a big figure in starting the Chicano rock movement and a huge rock and roll star. All of them tragically died due to the poor weather conditions and the pilot losing control of the aircraft causing all on board to pass away.

9- After watching the documentary “Early Days of Rock and Roll,” Composed by Pamela Page and Patrick Montogomery, there were some essential takeaways. Rock ‘n’ roll is a black rhythm that the whites repackage to perform before white audiences. Some of the performers in the documentary are unidentified, but their performance is exemplary, and only a few of the performers develop their styles from the black models. The documentary elaborates on how white performers emerged from backgrounds such as country music to play the new music. There is also the depiction of the Memphis music scene, which could have been the Hall of Fame for Rock ‘n’ roll. There are some significant moments such as the 1950s where the public opposition of Rock ‘n’ roll and the self-destruction of rock stars led to its decline. Some significant artists mentioned in the documentary are the Beatles, who led to the revival of pop music in the 1950s.

10- The documentary I chose to watch is titled Behind The Music: The Day the Music Died. It is about a tragic accident that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper faced and sadly, passed from. Buddy Holly’s music was a type that wouldn’t let down the joyful mood even after the song was over, and Ritchie was one of the firs ethnic artist’s to cross over, making way for new types of music to come through. Winter of 1959, all three of them passed away in a place crash that took place in an Iowa cornfield. Rock and roll then came to a slow little halt, gave people who knew them well, an inspiration to create some songs in their honor. In 1954, rock and roll came back even stronger thanks to Elvis Presley and his fusion of white country swing and black rhythm and blues. It was a really important part in the music of history when both genres of music became intermingling.

In 1958, Buddy Holly did not have a band or a hit record, even though he released many good top 40 and top 50 hits. The only way he could have been able to help himself and make money, he had to go on a tour that he did not want to go on at all. At this time, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper started rising in the charts. The Big Bopper was JP Richardson’s stage name, and apparently really had a feel for music and was getting to be very successful even though he came from a humble background. When he left for tour, he left behind his daughter and 6 month pregnant wife.

Buddy Holly’s musical career was really packed into 8 months, which is an incredibly short career. For the most part, these three artist’s came from pretty humble background, but still with the drive to help support their families, used their love for music to skyrocket their musical careers and make a difference in music all over the world to come.
