Overview:

For this Performance Task Assessment, you will create a podcast episode where you discuss public health nursing,
Population health, and the role of the public health nurse in the time of a pandemic.

Public Health Nursing and Population Health:

The terms “public health” and “population health” can be difficult to differentiate for nurses and lay people alike. As a
nurse leader, it is important to not only understand the differences but also to be able to explain those difference to
others. In addition, public health nurses have a dynamic and unique role in the health field which can be applied in a
variety of scenarios. Your facility recognizes this and has created a podcast series that discusses public health nursing.
You have been asked to contribute an episode to the series on the differences between public health nursing and other
types of nursing, population health, and the role of the public health nurse in a pandemic.

***In this Performance Task Assessment, you will create a 5- to 7-minute audio recording “podcast episode” where you
discuss various aspects of public health nursing, population health, and the role of the public health nurse. You will use
the “Record Audio” function in Brightspace, which is found in the Submission Folder for the Competency Assessment.

“In your podcast recording, address the following prompts. You may want to create an outline to guide you while
recording. A written component, however, is not required for submission.***

1. Explain how public health nursing differs from other types of nursing

2. Explain what is meant by the term “population health” from a public health perspective.

3. Describe how a public health nurse (PHN) analyzes and narrows a population down using various kind of information
including social determinants of health.

4. Compare a PHN’s approach to population health with a hospital system’s approach to population health

5. Consider the Covid-19 pandemic and the multifaceted approach to prevention and management of infectious
diseases. Public health nurses must assume many roles over the course of a pandemic

6. Explain the role of the public health nurse to enforce public health law, specifically in times of pandemic.

7. Besides public health law enforcement explain at least three different roles that public health nurses assume during a
pandemic.
