Page Ranking

Explain the “Hyperlink Trick”, the “Authority Trick”, and “Random Surfer Trick”.
For each trick, explain why each trick was created and/or what problem the trick
was designed to solve.
● DecorMyEyes.com showed up as one of the first links on Google’s search results
for online eyeglasses in late 2010, but for all the wrong reasons. After the NY
Times published “A Bully Finds a Pulpit on the Web”
(http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/28/business/28borker.html?_r=1) Google
quickly modified its secret sauce. Read the NY Times article and BetaBeat’s
follow up: “Brooklyn Scammer, DecorMyEyes.com, Will See Jail

m-will-see-jail-time/). And to show you that some people never change, seven
years later, the same guy is at it again, but this time as OpticsFast
(www.nytimes.com/2017/05/25/business/eyeglass-vendor-imprisoned-for-terrorizi
ng-consumers-is-accused-of-fraud.html or see the file attached to this post). In
your opinion, what flaw did DecorMyEyes exploit to increase its ranking? Explain
your reasoning.
● Explain the relationship between page ranking and “googlebombing”. (Several
prominent examples are described here:
/www.screamingfrog.co.uk/google-bombs. Others can be found with simple web
searches. A recent high profile example targeted President Trump
(www.seroundtable.com/trump-gets-googlebombed-google-idiot-26076.html).
