discussion 1

Nurses are the largest group of health care personnel in rapidly changing and developing health systems, and they are primarily responsible for providing people with quality care. All practical settings are affected by healthcare systems’ political, environmental, technological, and financial pressures. These changes may provide opportunities for all personnel, particularly nursing staff, to strengthen their position and role in healthcare policies and management (Hajizadeh et al., 2021).

APRNs, in particular, have a unique perspective that enables them to provide meaningful input at multiple levels. Nurse practitioners significantly impact health policy (Coloff, 2020).

In addition to being clinical professionals, nurses also function as political activists, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers. Many nurses understand that they must be active in the legal issues affecting the public’s health and welfare if they are to have control over practice and advance the nursing profession as significant participants in the healthcare industry (Milstead & Shorts, 2019).

A nurse can become a member of a state nurse organization. Many national nursing organizations have state chapters or societies whose goals are even more focused on shaping nursing policy in their particular state. These groups, particularly for NPs, provide an opportunity to advocate for full practice authority, which is not a nationally accepted standard. These organizations may offer internships or fellowships for nurses to learn about and gain experience in policymaking (Marymount University, 2021).

Shared governance models, which empower nurses to make decisions about nursing practice and elevate their proximity to patients as a valuable asset in their ability to make good choices, can be promoted by nurse leaders at their workplace. Patients benefit from deputizing nurses because decisions about their care are made by professionals who are intimately familiar with the details of their health and how those details may change from day to day or even hour to hour (Marymount University, 2021).

Nurses with a master’s degree or a doctorate play an essential role in qualitative and quantitative health research. This includes collaborating directly with medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental organizations to identify and comprehend knowledge gaps in health care. This could involve gaps in healthcare delivery, a lack of current guidelines for specific health issues, or how environmental toxins affect population health. Real-world problems that affect individuals in their own practices are addressed in nurse-led research. Quality research findings are critical for advancing nursing practice, passing healthcare legislation, and improving patient care (Coloff, 2020).

A factor influencing nursing leaders’ participation in health policymaking is a lack of available resources. One sub-themes for creating a positive work environment is gaining external support. Lack of support from various sectors, such as the political sector, government officials, or professional organizations, impedes nurses from participating in policymaking (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Another factor influencing nurses’ participation in policymaking processes is the establishment of communication networks. This network is primarily concerned with interacting with internal organizational members and interested external public (Hajizadeh et al., 2021).

Nurses must understand the significance of empowerment and participation in policymaking. Despite advancements in nurses’ skills and knowledge, there is a gap in nurses’ active involvement in health policymaking processes. Identifying the barriers and facilitators can help nurses play a more effective role in health policy formulation, implementation, and reform (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Creating a context for nurses to communicate with policymakers, reducing the burden of their workload, and using appropriate leadership approaches are all things that can help nurses in this regard. Furthermore, these factors could be used to develop educational programs to improve nurses’ knowledge and skills (Hajizadeh et al., 2021).

DISCUSSION 2

Sometimes as nurses we’re frustrated by policies that affect our practice because those that developed the policy had a limited background, knowledge, or experience in the field. As nurses working at the bedside and being the ones that spend the majority of our time with the patient, we should influence these changes. There are several opportunities for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in the policy-making process. Locally nurses can take on leadership positions within their healthcare system and participate in research studies to continue to promote evidence-based practices. They can also run to become part of their local state board of nursing. Nurses can also join professional nursing organizations like the American Nurses Association and the Oncology Nursing Society. The American Nurses Association aims to help solve public health problems and eliminate healthcare disparities. They work with Congress and other regulatory agencies to advocate by allowing their members to send messages to Congress. For example, the ANA was able to send over 350,000 messages with its members to Congress about the lack of PPE that was available for nurses when the pandemic first started (Brusie, 2021). This resulted in the formation of the pandemic response fund and educational resources being available to nurses. The Oncology Nursing Society promotes oncology nurses to practice at their full scope, improve the quality of care provided to patients, and advocate for payment models that positively impact the practice (ONS, 2022). Being part of ONS, the nurses can connect to elected officials, policy leaders, and decision-makers virtually through video calling, telephone interviews, and podcasts. They frequently testify before Congress, the U.S. FDA, and they hold workshops where members can partner with legislators.

Possible Challenges with these Opportunities

Having a lack of mentoring available from leaders can impact a nurse’s desire to be involved in the health policy development phases. Other challenges and barriers are not having enough knowledge/skills, a negative image of nursing, and lack of involvement, structure, and resources (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Little to no support from political, governmental, or professional organizations has influenced a nurse’s participation in policy-making as well. Overall nurses not having sufficient knowledge of health policy making is the reason why they’re not typically involved in the process. These challenges can be overcome by educating nurses on how a policy is made, how a nurse can become involved in their workplace, and by encouraging nurses to join organizations that provide them opportunities to lobby. This is a team effort that would also involve reducing workload burdens and improving leadership approaches.

Strategies to Better Advocate for Policy-Making

Strategies that can be used to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making are the spread of education and social media. A study found that education and active learning increases retention and promotes health policy involvement among nurses (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). Therefore, nursing educators at institutes should educate their students on how they can be a part of policymaking and the role they can have. The same can be done at healthcare organizations by the staff nursing educator. Social media provides a platform that can be used to engage the public in advocating for a policy and also reaching out to policymakers (Anders, 2020). Using social media a nurse can share their mission, values, and what change they are advocating for. The topic can also have a hashtag included which allows others to share their thoughts and experiences in regard as well. For example, some of you may have seen the picture of a nurse on social media that showed the bruises on her mask from wearing an N95 for long periods. The picture served the purpose of showing the effects that caring for a coronavirus patient had on a nurse. Another nurse also went to social media to talk about the shortages of PPE we experienced.

DISCUSSION 3

Setting realistic professional development goals can help people find a successful career. The objectives enhance professional competence, knowledge, and skills. Professional development objectives allow one to improve character qualities and potentially stand out as a more desirable candidate to employers (Havea & Mohanty, 2020). The SMART framework should be used to simplify a targeted approach to goal achievement when setting professional development goals. Consequently, the objectives ought to be precise. The objectives must be clear. For instance, the educational activities should be clear if the focus is on academic pursuits that improve professional development.

Goals should be measurable for someone to monitor their progress. It is essential to monitor academic activity progress when developing knowledge and skills or performing well on tests (Havea & Mohanty, 2020). Goals should be attainable, so one should set academic activities within reach regarding time constraints, educational requirements, skills, and experience. The objectives should align with one’s aspirations for their chosen career path. Academic pursuits ought to support the chosen career path. If not, they might be less beneficial for professional development. The objectives should also be time-bound, with a clear start and finish date (Bagdadli et al., 2019). Academic tasks should be coordinated with a specific deadline and cap to ensure real progress, prevent procrastination, and allow for future professional development activities.

Learning a new skill in telemedicine and oncology practice, reading books and researching tele-oncology, pursuing and excelling in the current degree at Walden University, building a professional network with academic mentors, and learning technologies to use in the field are some academic activities that will help me achieve my professional development goals. Gaining new abilities will elevate my practice and competence above most of my peers in my field (Bagdadli et al., 2019). Reading more books and articles will give me more knowledge and unlock concepts that could lead to innovations and inventions in tele-oncology because knowledge truly is power. Additionally, reading will improve one’s vocabulary, critical reasoning, and decision-making skills (Havea & Mohanty, 2020). Continuing one’s education in the medical field through one’s place of employment is an excellent way to keep abreast of recent advancements in the scientific and clinical aspects of one’s field.

Through networking with academic mentors from the university and tele-oncology, I will be able to receive support for my academic life, and my professional development goals will receive a boost as a result. The mentors will provide me with the information and direction I require to ensure that my chosen educational path will lead to success. The academic activities I have outlined above will assist me in embracing social change, which the university strongly emphasizes (Havea & Mohanty, 2020). As a result of my continuing education and training, I can offer psychiatric patients care of the highest possible standard. This knowledge will also assist me in launching community initiatives that focus on healthy living and cancer prevention strategies for those in high-risk social groups, such as people who are overweight and obese, drug addicts, families who live close to industrial areas, smokers, and people who have a history of risky sexual behavior.

DISCUSSION 4

Students’ competency development must be appropriately documented in portfolio content for portfolio-based assessments. Collection and documentation of portfolio content is the responsibility of students (Oudkerk et al., 2020). This, in my opinion, may convey a picture of who I am, what I can bring to a company, and what I intend to accomplish there. There are bound to be many applicants for the position, and I am sure they will all start to resemble each other after a while. Getting the hiring manager’s attention by making a personal statement on my resume is critical if I want to be interviewed. During my job experience or internship, I plan to demonstrate the development of my skill sets into aspiring to be a professional. I plan to use my portfolio to show prospective employers my work experience.

The strategy for my portfolio will focus on growth and development goals. The nurse can better meet the requirements of their patients if they have a basic understanding of growth and development (Gamble, 2012). Conception is the beginning of an organized process that lasts until death. While everyone goes through distinct stages of growth and development, the speed, and behaviors at which this process occurs differ from person to person. As a nurse, I need to be aware of the specific periods of growth that children go through and the distinct demands that accompany them. I will need to be familiar with the processes of normal growth and development if I am going to be able to care for children and adolescents. As a nurse, I will be better able to identify deviations from normal and plan appropriate nursing measures if I understand what is typical.

Social change, a demographic approach, dependence on epidemiology, health education and prevention, and a long-term sense of social responsibility are some public health ideals reflected in public health. As our population and social structure have evolved, so have healthcare practices and availability. There are social determinants of health. They alter healthcare professionals’ approaches in their day-to-day work, and the strategies healthcare organizations employ to serve their local populations. Professional development goals can be achieved by incorporating growth and development and evidence-based practice methodologies into my professional development plan. Human growth is not always uniform. A person’s growth rate is at its fastest throughout the formative years of life. However, the growth rate slows down in the following years. It is also possible to claim that different body areas have different growth rates. As a nurse, I’m particularly interested in learning how to use EBP to compare a child’s growth and development.

EBP is changing how nurses treat their patients and will continue to do so in the future. In nursing school, we are taught that evidence-based practice is critical. While at school, we learn about the need to provide high-quality health care. Over many years, research and clinical practice have converged on this high-quality care based on evidence (Mikkonen et al., 2020). Nursing evidence-based practice (EBP) continues to grow, and numerous resources are available to help nurses grasp the principles and process, including journals, models, and books. Understanding and implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) is an essential skill for all nurses, regardless of the setting in which they work. When pursuing a career as an APRN, I fit with the University’s focus on social change by expanding, developing, and applying evidence-based treatment.
