ENVSOCTY 1HA3 – Society, Culture & Environment (2022-23 – Fall)
Activity #2 – Urban Issues: Residential Segregation
INTRODUCTION
Introduction:
In the Settlement & Urban Geographies section of this course, you have been learning about:
• neighbourhoods as “a part of the city that displays some internal homogeneity regarding type of housing, may be
characterized by a relatively uniform income level and/or ethnic identity, and usually reflects certain shared
social values”;
• residential segregation as “the spatial separation of population subgroups within the wider population” (i.e. the
separation of the charter/dominant/majority group and the minority group(s)); and
• how there are two primary forms of residential segregation (i.e. involuntary segregation, in which residential
clustering occurs by structural constraints and discrimination; and congregation, in which residential clustering
occurs by choice)
Applicable lectures:
• Urban Structure and Local Change
Applicable textbook chapter:
• Chapter 8: Urban Form and the Social Geography of the City
Instructions:
After watching the above lecture and reading the corresponding textbook pages/chapter, we would like you to explore a
segregation simulator call the Parable of the Polygons (https://ncase.me/polygons/) in order to complete Activity #2.
Before you begin the activity, it is important that you watch the short Activity #2: Urban Issues: Residential Segregation
instructional video, which will give you a brief recall of the key drivers of residential segregation and why it happens, as
well as an explanation of how to use the segregation simulator in order to complete the activity. Once you have watched
the instructional video, answer the questions on the accompanying Questions & Answers document.
Due: Friday, November 11 at 11:59 PM to the appropriate Avenue to Learn drop-box (Assignments > Activity #2 –
