Modelling, Simulation and Visualization for Engineering Coursework

This coursework builds on what you have learnt during the module by applying this to an interesting problem comprising multiple stakeholders. There are 4 parts to this course work – you should complete all parts.

Part 1: Produce a Rich Picture showing the current air transport system – include within this an aircraft manufacturer, large airport such as Heathrow, an airline company, holiday operators, and other influencers, etc.

Feel free to expand the Rich Picture as necessary to include other entity relationships. The key is to show the major links between the elements of the air transport system. Your Rich Picture should be legible and fit on a single side of paper (either A4 or A3) and be created using either Microsoft PowerPoint, Visio or Omnigraffle. Each entity in the Rich Picture should be described.

Please provide a 500-word summary for your rich picture.

Part 2: Taking your Rich Picture, create a causal loop diagram with the aircraft manufacturer at the centre. In this instance, assume the aircraft manufacturer is interested in future projections for the need for new aircraft. Consider the impacts of the air transport system such as runway capacity (apparently reaching saturation prior to 23 March 2020), changes in passenger demand, pre and post COVID-19 etc.

There are other influencing factors that you should include in the causal loop diagram – undertake research to provide evidence to back up your diagram. Each entity in the causal loop diagram should be described in terms of the influence it has. If you make the claim that for example, passenger demand is set to decrease then please provide references to justify your claim.  You can use InsightMaker, Microsoft Powerpoint , Visio or Omnigraffle.

Please provide a 500-word summary for your causal loop diagram.

Part 3: Produce a model/simulation that allows someone to change the weightings of the causal loop and to see the effect on the relationships as a result of the change. You can use InsightMaker, Excel or Matlab/Simulink.

This simulation should be made available for examination along with any assumptions you have made and back these up by reference to literature.

Please provide a 500-word summary explaining how to use your model.

Part 4: Produce a short 1000-word self-reflection on how you would improve the accuracy/validity of the above 3 parts.

Please note references can be included within your 500 word summaries or included in a separate single page at the end of your submission.
