Imagine you work for a large company – give a short outline of what it does. Your company
is developing a five-year strategic plan for information systems. Choose a company that
mostly uses traditional RDBMS systems to process the bulk of their information. You have
been tasked with investigating NoSQL Database Technologies and writing a 2500 research
report comparing and contrasting NoSQL Databases with traditional Relational Database
Management Systems. Important to consider will be:
Remember that figures and tables which you are importing in can be useful but too many can
look like too much of other peoples work so use these kind of material sparingly. Consider
creating your own table to compare the technologies accross different categories, do
something like this yourself is much more impactful.
Watch out for the level at which you pitch your report – make sure it's not too basic.
Given that you are "imagining" a situation outline some details about the company you work
for to give an appropriate context. Indicate the size of the company, key strategic objectives,
competitive landscape, the technologies the use and those used within the industry. Mention
the type of data they process in their different capacities. Does it tend to be structured or
unstructured? E.G. Orders and bookings and things like that tend to be very structured data
whereas tweets, posts, texts, documents and videos tend to be unstructured.
Try to incorporate analysis skills and and techniques you have learned throughout your time
at ITB. Bring in things you have learned from other subjects – e.g. Cost Benefit and Return on
Investment Analysis.
Use appropriate Harvard style citation and referencing in your work. Try to get good quality
citations from relevant reputable journals.
Your report should include the following sections:
 Your company’s current technologies
 The likely direction of your company in terms of other technologies
Windows/Linux/Java/C# etc.
 Type and Structure of the Data being captured/processed
 Overall Industry Trends.
 Implications of the move to cloud on NoSQL v Rdbms
 Cost of Investment
 Cost of Retraining
 Return on Investment
 Database Industry Standards
 Complexity of Change/Implementation
 Ability of Technologies to support your company’s particular needs over the next 5
years.
