Designing Composites using Granta EduPack 2022

  1. It is desired to produce an aligned and continuous fiber-reinforced epoxy composite having vol% fibers £ 50. In addition, a minimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity of 60 GPa is required, as well as a minimum tensile strength of 1310 MPa. Design three composites using the fibers listed below:
    1. Glass fiber
    2. Carbon fiber
    3. Kevlar fiber (Aramid polymer based fiber)

Use unfilled epoxy resin (heat resistant) as the matrix.

Use the composite synthesizer tool in Granta EduPack 2022 Composites (Simple Bounds) for continuous fibers to design the composites (Uni-directional (UD) and Qusi-isotropic (QI)) and generate the predicted properties. Your final input should include the followings:

  1. Properties (density, modulus, and tensile strength) of each composite as predicted by Synthesizer tool in Granta EduPack (15 points, 5 point for each composite). Assume the following stress levels on the epoxy matrix at fiber failure: E-glass—70 MPa; carbon (PAN standard modulus)—30 MPa; and aramid—50 MPa. Assume epoxy has a modulus of elasticity of 3.1 GPa and a tensile strength of 75 MPa.
  2. Compare the predicted values above with the predictions based on equations 16.10a and 16.17 in your textbook. (15 points).
  3. Your final recommendation of the best candidate amongst the 3 composites and why? (10 points)

  1. It is desired to produce Al matrix reinforced with ceramic particulates having a maximum of 20 vol.% to produce MMC with a minimum modulus of 80 GPa and tensile strength of 75 MPa. Design three MMC composites using the following particulates:
    1. SiC
    2. Titanium diboride (TiB2)
    3. Alumina (Al2O3)

Use cast Al as the matrix.

Use the composite synthesizer tool in Granta EduPack 2022 Composites (Simple Bounds, particulate) to design the composites and generate the predicted properties: your final input should include the followings:

  1. Properties (modulus and tensile strength) of each composite as predicted by Synthesizer tool in Granta EduPack (15 points, 5 point for each composite).
  2. Compare the predicted values above with the predictions based on the rule of mixture (15 points).
  3. Your final recommendation of the best candidate amongst the 3 composites and why? (10 points)

  • It is desired to produce a 5-layer laminate composite (each ply or laminae has a thickness of 0.5 mm) with a density less than 700 Kg/m3, a minimum flexural modulus of 20 GPa, and a minimum flexural strength of 20 MPa. The face sheets must be chopped glass fiber/polyester, ply#3 can be any metal foam, layers 2 and 4 must be polyurethane foam. Report the final composition of each layer in the laminate composite, composite density, price, and mechanical properties. (20 points).
