Identify the following sources for this assignment (that you will eventually use in your final Research Paper Assignment)

PART A: PURPOSE OF RESEARCH PAPER PREPARATION ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this assignment is for you to identify the sources you will be using for your final
Research Paper Assignment and to clear these sources with me.
There are four sources you will need to identify and upload/submit for the Research Paper Preparation
Assignment. All of these sources you will use for your final Research Paper Assignment.
If any of the four sources are not approved by me, you will have to select an alternative(s) and email it
to me for approval.
The Research Paper Preparation Assignment is meant to set you up for success for the final Research
Paper Assignment to ensure that you are choosing and eventually analyzing the correct type of
materials that are required.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Identify the following sources for this assignment (that you will eventually use in your final
Research Paper Assignment)
a. Canadian news media article featuring a criminal justice topic that you are interested
in.
b. Identify the page numbers in your textbook that discuss this particular criminal justice
topic and note these page numbers down.
c. Identify TWO scholarly journal articles that conduct primary research on this particular
criminal justice topic
2. In a Word document, provide a hyperlink to the news media article you have chosen. Please
ensure that when I open your Word document, I can click on the hyperlink and see your news
media article.
3. In the same Word document, provide the page numbers of your textbook that discuss this
particular criminal justice topic. You do not need to summarize the discussion from your
textbook; you only need to identify the page numbers in your textbook that cover your topic.
4. Download a PDF file of BOTH scholarly journal articles you have chosen and upload both of
these PDF files into the assignment folder. Please test opening these PDF files to ensure that
they open properly.
TO SUMMARIZE: On the due date specified above (and in the course outline) by 11pm, you will submit
the following documents in the ‘Research Paper Preparation Assignment’ folder:
✓ One Word document – include the hyperlink to your news media story and the page numbers
of the textbook where the top is discussed
✓ Two PDF documents – of your two scholarly articles that analyze your identified criminal
justice system topic
HOW WILL YOU GET YOUR MARK AND FEEDBACK?
Marks: Out of 2%. You will see your mark in the Gradebook in Moodle. In order to earn the full 2% you
must complete the Assignment in its entirety and properly according to the instructions.
Feedback: I will upload an audio file for you. Please listen to this audio file as I will provide you with
detailed feedback on the sources you chosen, whether they are appropriate for your final research
paper assignment and whether you need to select different one’s and resubmit them to me for
approval via email

PART B:
Value: 20%
Length: 6 academic sources, approximately 100 words/source
Format: MLA style
Assignment Guidelines
In this assignment, you will write an annotated bibliography about Nella Larsen’s
Passing. Your annotated bibliography must be organized around a specific topic. In other
words, please organize your chosen sources according to a topic rather than simply write
your bibliography about the book. Here are some examples of topics:
Passing and Class Passing and Race Passing and Sexuality
Passing and Miscegenation Laws Passing and the “New Woman”
You’re welcome to simply choose to organize your bibliography according to one of the
above topics, or you may choose your own topic. But you must ensure that your
annotated bibliography is about something more specific than just the novel (although, of
course, it must also be about the novel).
Deborah Knott, from the University of Toronto’s New College Writing Centre, explains
the annotated bibliography this way:
An annotated bibliography is an account of the research that has been done
on a given topic. Like any bibliography, an annotated bibliography is an
alphabetical list of research sources. In addition to bibliographic data, an
annotated bibliography provides a concise summary of each source and
some assessment of its value or relevance.
In other words, an annotated bibliography is like a snapshot of an academic debate about
a particular topic. It gathers together the best sources, the most important voices, on a
given topic, and summarizes and evaluates them. On Moodle, I’ve provided an example
of an annotated bibliography that you can use as a guide. However, it was written quite
some years ago, so the MLA style that they use is outdated. Please check the Owl at
Purdue site for up-to-date information on the most recent MLA-style guidelines.
Continued overleaf…
And so, in your annotated bibliography, you will provide a list of six academic sources
in MLA style. Then, underneath each listing, you will include a short paragraph that
summarizes the article. Moreover, in addition to your summary, you will also assess the
value of the article’s argument in terms of its effectiveness at addressing the topic that
you have chosen. Ideally, some of the articles will speak to one another (either directly,
through citation, or indirectly, since they are discussing the same or similar issues). You
may find it helpful to weigh the effectiveness of the articles against one another.
Sometimes, an article will include an abstract, which is the author’s summary of their
own work. Please do not rewrite or reproduce the abstract in your own summary; your
summary must be entirely your own work.
