Substance abuse is prevalent within our society and plagues our communities. This
disease harms the individual and takes a toll on the dynamics of the family structure. If
left unbothered, substance abuse will remain a concern for people of all ages.
1. Examine the social determinant risk factors for the selected practice problem.
Substance use disorder is characterized by internal cravings and loss of control despite
adverse consequences (Jordan & Anderson, 2017). Factors contributing to substance
abuse are gender, ethnicity, age, income level, education, stressors, and sexual
orientation (ODPHP-2, n.d.). In addition, adolescents' substance abuse behaviors are
influenced by family, social networks, and peer pressure (ODPHP-2, n.d.). The use of
substance use as an adolescent increases the risk of lifelong substance use into
adulthood (Jordan & Anderson, 2017). Consequences of substance use disorders can
include failure to fulfill work and home obligations, social and interpersonal problems
(Jordan & Anderson, 2017), incarnation, crime, and homicide (Compton & Chang,
2017). Lastly, long-term outcomes such as organ damage, infections, and mental illness
are adverse effects of substance abuse use (Compton & Chang, 2017).
1. Summarize a related Healthy People 2030 Goal.
One of the goals of Healthy People 2030 is to reduce drug and alcohol addiction. Ways
to help reach the goal of reducing drug addiction are to implement ways to help
minimize opioid usage, increase admissions to substance abuse treatment programs,
and increase emergency department (ED) referrals for substance abuse treatment
(ODPHP-1, n.d.).
1. Propose one evidence-based intervention to address the Healthy People 2030
goal after reviewing the literature.
An evidence-based intervention to address drug addiction is to provide ED-initiated
buprenorphine with referral to a substance abuse treatment program. In the study by
D'Onofrio et al. (2017), ED-initiated buprenorphine reduced illicit opioid uses and
increased engagement in outpatient addiction treatment programs. In addition,
buprenorphine usage is also associated with decreased opioid-related mortalities
(Larochelle et al., 2018).

efficient, effective, and efficacious.

The efficiency of ED-initiated buprenorphine can be determined by comparing the costs
of implementing the intervention with the outcome of the results.
The effectiveness of ED-initiated buprenorphine can be achieved by evaluating the
intervention's impact during and after the implementation of the intervention.
The efficacy of ED-initiated buprenorphine can be addressed through analyzing the
associated direct and indirect costs in implementing the intervention (Gochemaur &
Lillis, 2015).
