Smith viewed himself as a warrior, a conqueror, who wanted to emulate the success of the Spanish by colonizing Virginia. Almost everything went wrong. As it was stated, the colony had great difficulty sustaining itself. Many of the settlers refused to work or gave up. The Powhatans proved formidable opponents. Smith was taken captive, and his position with the colonists may have been compromised when he returned. All of these setbacks represent either “barriers” to his successful “conquest” of Virginia, or (and) a radical change from the narrative he had hoped to present about the success of Jamestown. Can you trace the course of his responses to these reversals? Is he successful in negotiating with the Natives? Does he hold his own when attacked or imprisoned? What strategies does he use?
