Research Paper
Each student will be required to submit a research paper on a famous American trial. Go to
the following link https://famous-trials.com/ and choose one of the featured trials. If the
link does not work, type “famous trials” in your search engine and look for the site. You
should find Famous American Trials — in-depth accounts of America’s most famous
trials (presented by the University of Missouri — Kansas City School of Law and Professor
Douglas Linder).
Avoid trials that have more than three defendants as they are difficult to report on. Do not
choose a trial with an exterior web site. Read all the links to the trial and report on the
following:
 The factual background that led to the trial, including the identities of the litigants or
criminal defendants.

o What was alleged to have happened; and
o When the relevant events took place.
 Summarize the trial events and all appeals, including:

o Report the trial court and appellate court locations, state or federal, and the
geographic area. If this information is not available, please note this in your
work.
o List and discuss the counsel for each side, including any noteworthy material
you discover about the counsel.
o Discuss the major testimony/witnesses that were presented in the case that you
believe led to the eventual verdict/judgment.
o Discuss the legal basis for any appeals and the result.
 How could the case have been better defended or prosecuted? What could have been
done differently to achieve a favorable outcome (or a more favorable outcome)?
 Explain the significance your case had for cases that followed it and for the
legal/national community in general.
 Include a bibliography listing all sources utilized in preparing your project.
