Directions: The following is a practical application for the information discussed in chapter 1 of the text. This practical application is worth 30 points. Select and complete one of the following practical applications and submit your results through the course-room submission module before Sunday 11:59PM. (Addresses ULO 1-6)

1. Examine the various criteria you see as important and devise your own definition of security. Take a moment now to write down what you consider to be the working definition for security. As you continue through the text, see how your definition changes.
2. Create a timeline depicting the major developments in the history of security. In addition to the events covered in the textbook, try to identify how the security-related developments related to other events in history.
3. Choose the top twenty historical events that shaped the security profession of today. Research both the Internet and an online research database to see what more you can learn about the events.
4. Research the early historical figures in the security industry. Identify someone in the history of security and create a profile of that person from available biographical data. Imagine you were in a business partnership with that person, and list the changes your skills, insight, or vision would allow you to make in the security field because of your partnership. Feel free to exaggerate.
5. Examine the impact of conflict on the security profession. Wars and related events with global impact have an effect on the security industry. After the impact of September 11, 2001, there was increased interest in protecting industrial and manufacturing facilities, both in Canada and the U.S. Examine the text and your resources and create a list of ten changes in the security field that have happened as a result of such conflicts, and ten additional things that could change given the right circumstances.
