How does Aquinas respond to those who say that God’s existence cannot be demonstrated because it is self-evident? And how does he respond to those who claim that God’s existence is not demonstrable but must be affirmed by faith alone?
Aquinas, drawing on Aristotle, offers cosmological arguments for God’s existence based on motion in two ways. The first way argues that whatever is moved is moved by another and there cannot be an infinite regress of movers. The second way argues that it is a necessary truth that whatever is moved is moved by another and this implies the necessary existence of an unmoved prime mover, which is God. Outline Aquinas’ presentation of these arguments. Do you find them convincing? Why or why not?
