1.Discussion: 1920s Culture and the New Woman

Following World War I, the American culture changed significantly. Historians have pointed to many influences that shaped this new culture, including Jazz music, prohibition, changing fashion, and availability of automobiles. However, one of the greatest changes occurred in redefining the role of women in society. After reviewing the provided resources, answer the following questions (you do not have to answer all of them and you are not limited to them).

To what extent is the cultural change of the 1920s a reaction to the devastation of World War I? How did women’s rights change and how did women’s roles in society change? What characterized the “New Woman”, and what do the opposition sources tell us about the concern this New Woman brought? What lasting impact do you see of the Flapper culture or the New Woman from the 1920s?

Rather, I’m looking for you to create your own interpretation, explain the emotional content of the piece, or discuss some original insight. Include citations as needed. Historians of the same time period vary their research topics in order for us to gain a richer and fuller picture of the past and so that our understanding of the past will be as accurate and complete as possible. In the interest of allowing you, as young historians, to follow your own interests, please select one of the following topics to address.

The Second Rise of the Klan:  After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s. You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them:  Why did the Klan experience a rise in membership in the 1920s? Why was it socially acceptable to be a member of such an organization? What benefits (real or perceived) did members think that joining would give them? Why did this version of the Klan target African Americans, immigrants, Jews, and Catholics? What legacies are still present in modern America from the Klan?

The Red Scare: After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the Red Scare. You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: Coming out of World War I, the nation faced a new age of anxiety with the Red Scare. There were bombings, fear of communism, labor strikes & social unrest. How do you think the average Americans were feeling? Which events do you think produced the most anxiety in the average Americans?

3.Discussion: Olympics as Politics

While many historians focus on wars as the ultimate expression of politics, other historians see political and foreign policy in many popular culture events and activities, The Olympics in particular have been seen as not only sport but also an expression of national pride and politics. After reading the articles, answer the following questions:

Should the U.S. have boycotted the 1936 Olympics in order to protest the rising violence of Germany, or was competing necessary to prove that Hitler’s ideas of the superior race were false? Are the Olympics a way for countries to express their political beliefs, or should they be viewed as sporting events only? Are there any parallels that can be drawn to the recent Olympic Games?

Why do you believe this particular piece of history has been left out of textbooks and should that be changed? Would a national apology provide any benefits to those affected by the program or others? Could a program like this occur today? Why or why not? What struck you about Ruben Aguilar’s story?

New Deal in Texas: After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the New Deal in Texas. You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: Which project in Texas do you think had the largest impact? What was produced by this project? Who could serve in the organization? Do you see any flaws in the projects?
