13a. Looking for Patterns. Go to websites that aggregate ratings of products like films (metacritic.com and rottentomatoes.com are particularly useful). Determine how the scores are calculated, in other words, what is the process by which individual critic’s ratings of movies are aggregated into a single score (what constitutes a positive or negative review)? Does there appear to be any link between the aggregate score of the movie and its current box office success?

13b. Looking for Patterns. Attached is Norman Rockwell’s 1945 “A Homecoming Marine”. Where can you identify frequencies, magnitudes, structures, processes, causes and consequences in the scene provided?

A look at coding and comparison.

Identify a particular social problem. Then visit the New York Times online historical archive. Do a keyword search on the particular problem, reviewing how the New York Times discusses the problem and its causes. How does the way in which the newspaper discuss the problem change over time? Are old explanations dropped or integrated with newer causes?
