Choose one (or two visuals) that is arguing a point or making an argument (**If choosing two visuals, they must be arguing the same point)

Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

For this essay, you will type a 4-5 page paper (excluding the Works Cited page) analyzing and arguing about visual arguments. MLA format and academic writing style is necessary for this assignment. The prompt is as follows:

Choose one (or two visuals) that is arguing a point or making an argument (**If choosing two visuals, they must be arguing the same point). Describe the visual(s)—what we “see”—and explain the rhetorical situation of the visual(s). Then, analyze how the visual(s) is delivering its argument through visual devices (as discussed in class) and argue whether or not the visual(s) is persuasive/effective in arguing its point to the audience.

Important Note: The visual(s) you choose must be appropriate for a classroom setting; one that we may see as a class. No depictions of derogatory, vulgarity, etc. is allowed.

You need to cite or reference (in proper MLA format) from:

Sheffield, Jenna Pack, “Breaking Down an Image” (handout posted on Canvas–Course Readings in Week 10) AND
At least TWO credible outside sources (sources not given to you that help explain/support the rhetorical situation and/or analysis of the visual(s).
The visual(s) you are analyzing [cite the visual(s) as webpages, if you found them on a website]
Be sure to cite your sources properly with in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Remember—your Works Cited page is part of your essay document. You should have a Works Cited list of at least 4 sources: Sheffield’s article and two outside sources, and your chosen visual argument. If you analyze two visuals, then you would have the second visual cited too. NOTE: At the end/bottom of your Works Cited page, please copy and paste the actual visual(s) you are analyzing for Essay 4.

Remember: Your thesis should be 1-2 sentences long. It should include the title of the visual(s), what its arguing, methods of analysis, and whether or not the visual is persuasive or not to its viewers. Include body paragraphs that describe the visuals; explain its rhetorical situation; explain which devices are being used and why/how they are being used; and argue how/why the visual(s) is effective or not in convincing its viewers. Be sure to have clear topic sentences for each of the body paragraphs. Topic sentences should always relate back to the thesis and encapsulate the ideas of the body paragraph. Of course, include your standard introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Explain and elaborate on your claims/statements.
