Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven both succeeds and fails by mimetic standards. It effectively mirrors much of human behavior (like racism and greed), but it’s predicated on the notion of “effective dreaming,” which certainly doesn’t exist in reality. From an expressive perspective, Le Guin really shines: she has created a world all of her own and developed a concept, “effective dreaming,” that is uniquely hers. Because she so effectively reveals her vivid imagination, we have no doubt we’re reading Le Guin. The writing style is also uniquely Le Guin’s. Her sentences are crisp and clear; it’s easy to visualize what’s going on–even when the events are bizarre. Lastly, The Lathe of Heaven is a profoundly pragmatic work. Its message is simple: Don’t play God. Even the title–The Lathe of Heaven–suggests higher creative powers. Because she seeks to enlighten her audience–and does so with a metaphor rather than specific dictates–Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven succeeds from a pragmatic perspective.
