Description: Assessment 2 allows you to demonstrate your pedagogical content knowledge of
spelling by analysing texts according to English orthography and using your analysis to
design lesson plans for teaching spelling. You will be provided with examples of children’s
literature to use for this task.

e Read and analyse the texts provided on Moodle in terms of the spelling of the words they contain.

« Make notes about three types of orthographic knowledge (morphological, etymological, visual
knowledge) a child would need to read/write these words and others like them. Identify patterns in the
words that could inform content for your teaching (e.g., morphological knowledge or etymological
knowledge)

¢ Note some strategies for getting to the orthography of those words (e.g., analogy, word building
using the base, word families) and for monitoring the spelling (¢.g., visual analysis, proofreading,
comparison to other sources)
